Climb Mount Toubkal ➤ The New Route

A true mountain adventure combining altitude, culture and challenge

The essentials at a glance

Climb Mount Toubkal (4,167m), North Africa's highest peak, via a new scenic route through the Atlas Mountains. Trek through traditional Berber villages, cross mountain passes with panoramic views, and experience authentic mountain lodge accommodation. The challenging ascent requires good fitness and altitude acclimatization, with daily hikes averaging 9-12km through varied terrain including the Azzaden and Mizane valleys.

Join a spectacular trekking ascent to the summit of Mount Toubkal – 4,167 metres above sea level and the highest peak in North Africa.

This route follows a newer and less-travelled path through the Atlas Mountains, offering a more authentic and peaceful side of Morocco. Along the way, you trek through small traditional Berber villages, fertile valleys and dramatic mountain passes with sweeping panoramic views.

The ascent itself is physically demanding but not technically difficult. This means that most hikers with good basic fitness and experience from longer trekking days will reach the summit. At 4,167 metres, you are rewarded with a 360° panorama across the High Atlas – and on clear days, you may even glimpse the Sahara in the distance.

Throughout the journey, you are supported by a local team including a guide, cook and mule handlers. They take care of logistics, meals and local insight, allowing you to focus fully on the experience. The combination of professional support and genuine Moroccan hospitality creates a safe and memorable mountain adventure.

The journey begins and ends in Marrakech – a vibrant city at the foot of the mountains. Explore the narrow streets of the medina, experience the magical evening atmosphere of Djemaa el-Fna square and enjoy the striking contrast between city life and mountain silence.

This trip is ideal if you want to test yourself at altitude and gain experience trekking above 4,000 metres. Many use Toubkal as a stepping stone toward bigger goals such as Mount Kilimanjaro or trekking to Everest Base Camp. Here you gain a realistic sense of how your body responds to thinner air – in accessible and well-organised surroundings.

The route

Challenging

The ascent of Mount Toubkal is a solid challenge without being highly technical – perfect as your first real mountain summit experience. You reach approximately 4,167 metres, making altitude the primary challenge. The trip therefore requires good cardiovascular fitness, strong legs and some experience with long walking days in varied and uneven terrain. You gain valuable altitude experience while trekking on a route that remains accessible for well-prepared hikers.

Itinerary

See the day-by-day itinerary below.

It doesn’t matter at what time you arrive. We will be waiting for you at the airport in Marrakech. We then transfer you to the hotel in the centre of the city. While all the participants arrive, you can spend the afternoon visiting Marrakech.

Hotel (example): Riad Omar

After breakfast in Marrakech, you leave the city behind and drive toward the Atlas Mountains (approx. 1.5 hours). Along the way, you pass terraced fields, small Berber villages and impressive mountain landscapes. In Aguersioual (1,700 m), you meet the mule team and begin trekking with a gradual ascent through juniper trees and cultivated slopes toward Matat (1,800 m).

From there, you continue to Tizi Oudid Pass (2,100 m), the first panoramic highlight of the day. From the pass, the Azzaden Valley unfolds dramatically below. After a short break, you descend along a traditional mule trail to Aït Aïssa (1,800 m), one of the most picturesque villages in the valley.

Accomodation: Guesthouse in Aït Aïssa

The day begins at a relaxed pace through walnut groves and terraced fields toward Tizi Oussem (1,950 m), a charming Berber village with beautiful valley views. You continue along a scenic mountain path ascending toward Azib Tamsoult Refuge (2,256 m). The landscape gradually becomes more alpine as you pass open pastures and seasonal shepherd settlements.

Upon arrival in the early afternoon, there is the option of a short additional hike to the nearby waterfalls – the highest in the Atlas region. Dinner and overnight in dormitory accommodation at the refuge.

Accomodation: Guesthouse in Azib Tamsoult (dormitory)

Today’s trek leads up to Tizi Mezik Pass (2,489 m). The ascent takes approximately 2–3 hours and rewards you with spectacular views across the Imlil Valley and surrounding High Atlas peaks.

After a break at the pass, you descend toward Aremd (1,900 m), the largest village in the Imlil Valley. The trail passes through juniper trees and rocky slopes. Upon arrival, you check into a traditional mountain lodge and enjoy a warm shower and a well-deserved dinner.

Accomodation: Guesthouse in Aremd

After breakfast, you begin the ascent toward Toubkal Refuge (3,207 m), the base camp for the summit attempt of Mount Toubkal. The trail follows the Mizane Valley and passes the shrine of Sidi Chamarouch, a local pilgrimage site with a unique atmosphere.

As you gain elevation, the landscape becomes increasingly rugged and alpine. After 5–6 hours of trekking, you reach the refuge. The remainder of the day is dedicated to rest, hydration and preparation for the summit day. Dinner and overnight in dormitory accommodation.

Accomodation: Toubkal Refuge (dormitory)

Early wake-up (around 4–5 am) for the summit ascent. The climb takes approximately 3–4 hours and follows a steep scree slope and ridge. At the summit (4,167 m), you are rewarded with breathtaking 360° views across the High Atlas – and on clear days as far as the Sahara Desert.

After time at the top, you descend back to the refuge for lunch before continuing down through the Mizane Valley to Imlil (1,740 m). In the afternoon, you check into a comfortable guesthouse and celebrate your achievement with a well-earned dinner.

Hotel (example): Dar Assarou

After breakfast, transfer back to Marrakech. Check in at your Riad. You have the rest of the day to explore the wonderful city. (B)

This process typically takes 5–8 working days, but in some cases it may take longer for certain bookings. If you arrange your own transportation, we recommend waiting until we have confirmed your booking before making any arrangements.

Dates
If you can select a date in the trip calendar (in the booking form), then this is a possible start date. We regularly update our trips with sold-out dates; these dates will then appear in red/grey and cannot be selected.

You simply book a quote below the map on this page and we will return with a quote as soon as possible (usually within 48 working hours). Please note that we add a handling fee of 45 euro to each flight and this means that the flight will be cheaper if you book it yourself.

In Marrakech, you'll spend the night in a riad, a cosy tourist class hotel where breakfast is included. On the trek itself, you'll stay in guesthouses with shared bathroom facilities. The guesthouses on the trek are very basic, so don't expect anything resembling a hotel. In the guesthouses you will have private rooms, but in Toubkal Basecamp everyone stays in a dormitory as it's the only option.

If you're on a winter trek, it's important to note that the huts on the road are not heated, which puts requirements on your sleeping bag (see below under ‘equipment’).

In Marrakech, breakfast is included, but you'll need to buy the other meals yourself. On the trek, all meals are included and in guesthouses you can buy soft drinks. The kitchen team will provide drinking water and tea/coffee for meals.

Water for trek must be purchased at the huts.

A typical trekking day begins with a wake-up call between 06:00 - 06:30. After getting dressed and having breakfast, you pack your luggage and start trekking at around 08:00.  At around 12.00, you'll have a nice long lunch break before continuing on your afternoon hike. You'll arrive at your accommodation in the late afternoon.

This trip has a difficulty level of 3-4, which means that most hiking days on the tour are level 3 and a few are level 4.

Grade 3
Hiking in mountainous terrain with longer ascents and descents. You will hike 5-7 hours a day. Requires generally good fitness and health, but no special technical skills or prior experience. Requires good shoes, such as trekking or mountain boots.

Grade 4
Demanding hiking with daily marches of 6-8 hours, often in difficult terrain at higher altitudes. There can be longer ascents of up to 1,000 meters. Requires good physical condition, endurance, and knees and ankles capable of enduring prolonged descents. You need to be in good health and preferably have hiking experience. Requires good hiking boots and regular outdoor clothing. There can be significant temperature differences.

Read more about our grading system here.

When booking the tour, you will receive our practical information and packing list for the hiking ascent of Mount Toubkal.

Please note that when booking the tour from November to April it may be relevant to use crampons and ice axes.
These can be hired from the local guide.

Price
Crampons 20€ per pair
Ice axe 15€ per piece

Sleeping bag
It is also possible to rent a sleeping bag on the tour. It costs €20 for the whole week. If you're on a winter trek, it would be ideal to have a sleeping bag that can handle -20 degrees and you'll need to bring your own. The sleeping bags you can rent locally can handle down to minus seven degrees, so you will need to sleep with warm clothes in the sleeping bag.

We recommend taking out travel insurance that covers at least illness, accident, repatriation, lost holiday, luggage and liability. As a customer, you are responsible for taking out the necessary travel insurance to cover these costs.

Before taking out insurance, you should check whether you are already covered by travel or cancellation insurance through your home insurance company, credit card or similar - please note that there may be differences in insurance coverage.

Some nationalities do not need to apply for a visa before visiting Morocco. We ask you to check if you need to apply for a visa here.

We recommend checking with your health authorities or contacting your local doctor well in advance of departure to get updated information on relevant and possibly required vaccinations.

After booking this trip, you get access to various discount schemes.

Mount Toubkal can be climbed all year round, even in winter. Between November and April it is cool in the lower regions with daytime temperatures of 10-15 degrees centigrade. The temperature drops as you gain altitude and there is snow on the summit. From March the temperature rises and from May to October the daytime temperature reaches 20-25 degrees, with over 30 degrees in the lower regions during the height of summer.
