Climb Mount Toubkal ➤ North-Africas highest mountain

Trekking in the Atlas Mountains, and reach the summit of the highest peak in North Africa, Mount Toubkal (4.167 m) Stay in Berber villages and experience Marrakech.

8 Days / 7 Nights
Very challenging

The walking ascent of Mount Toubkal (4.167m) follows the old mule tracks through Berber villages and green valleys in the prettiest part of the Atlas mountains. The ascent to the summit of Mount Toukbal is not technically difficult, and most people reach the top with out complications. In Marrakech, a vibrant city beautifully situated at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, you can explore the alleys of the old part of town, along with markets where snake charmers, storytellers and acrobats every evening do their magical performances. The Atlas Mountains are probably the most beautiful and intriguing part of Morocco

This tour is particularly suitable for you who want to try out the height, and possibly later want to have a go at climbing Kilimanjaro in Tanzania or do the demanding trek to Everest Base Camp. Trekking to the top of Mount Toubkal will give you not just be an enjoyable experience, but also introduce you to being at a height where the oxygenlevel you breathe is noticeably smaller than what you are used to.

Itinerary

Here you can see the program for the trip.

You'll be met at the airport and driven to your riad in Marrakech. A riad is a traditional Moroccan house with a garden. The house is often very nicely refurbished and the stay is comfortable, stylish, luxurious and with a high level of service. The riads have created many local jobs (and pushed up property prices) and many people feel they have a stake in the riad system.

After breakfast, the transportation is ready and you will be driven to the village of Imi Ouglad, located at 1300moh, just over an hour's drive from Marrakech. Here you will meet the muleteers and mules. After loading the equipment, the tour begins. Through the colorful and beautiful valley and over a pass at 1500moh, you reach the village of Imsker. From here you continue on centuries-old mule trails to the Ousertik Valley, where you spend the night in a local guesthouse in the village of Gliz. (B, L, D)

The tour continues uphill through beautiful Berber villages. For centuries, the hard-working Berbers have built terraces on the hillsides. Here, people still live according to ancient traditions and hospitably invite passers-by to gain an insight into their daily lives. We continue upwards to North Africa's largest ski resort, Oukaimeden. After a short break, we continue to Tizi 'n Addi, where on a clear day there is a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains. We then descend to Tacheddirt, the highest village in the Atlas region, where the tented camp is set up near the riverbank (B,L,D).

Today's hike is fairly short, so you can save your energy and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. You'll cross the Imnane Valley, one of the most famous valleys in the Toubkal massif. After passing the Tizi 'n Tamatert mountain pass (2,300 m), you'll end the day's hike in the Berber village of Imlil. The rest of the afternoon is at your leisure. Imlil is the starting point for many walks in the area, so there are many mules, hikers and local traders (F, L, M).

You continue along the Mizane Valley. After passing the village of Aremd, continue towards the shrine of Sidi Chamarouch. Continue east and after crossing the floodplain, walk up mule tracks to the high cliffs overlooking the valley. After crossing the river, you finally arrive at Sidi Chamarouch. This shrine provides a fascinating insight into local life as people travel from all over the region with offerings and prayers for good life and health, and perhaps even the hope of chasing away an evil jinn or two. From here it's a steep climb up the trail that winds its way to the snowline and Toubkal Refuge (3206m), where you'll stop for the night (B, L, D).

Hotel (example): Toubkal Refuge (dormitory)

Early in the morning, before sunrise, you start your hike to the top of Jebel Toubkal (4,167m), the highest mountain in North Africa. The hike itself is uncomplicated, but the gradient and the rock masses in between make the hike a little difficult. The stunning views make it worth the effort. When you reach the top, you have unobstructed views in all directions. To the west is the Marrakech plain and to the south the Anti-Atlas Mountains. After a short stay, you'll head back and forth to Imlil, where you'll spend the night (B, L, D).

Hotel (example): Riad in Imlil

After breakfast, you'll be transferred to Marrakech. You have the day at leisure in Marrakech. Go in search of souvenirs in the city's small souk, take a peaceful stroll in the botanical gardens and visit Djeema el Fna Square, which is also a great place to enjoy a good dinner. Accommodation in Riad (F).

Now your journey is over. You'll be driven to the airport in time to catch your flight. We can organize extra nights in Marrakech

In Marrakech, you'll spend the night in a riad, a cosy tourist class hotel where breakfast is included. On the trek itself, you'll stay in guesthouses with shared bathroom facilities. The guesthouses on the trek are very basic, so don't expect anything resembling a hotel. In the guesthouses you will have private rooms, but in Toubkal Basecamp everyone stays in a dormitory as it's the only option.

If you're on a winter trek, it's important to note that the huts on the road are not heated, which puts requirements on your sleeping bag (see below under ‘equipment’).

In Marrakech, breakfast is included, but you'll need to buy the other meals yourself. On the trek, all meals are included and in guesthouses you can buy soft drinks. The kitchen team will provide drinking water and tea/coffee.

A typical trekking day begins with a wake-up call between 06:00 - 06:30. After getting dressed and having breakfast, you pack your luggage and start trekking at around 08:00.  At around 12.00, you'll have a nice long lunch break before continuing on your afternoon hike. You'll arrive at your accommodation in the late afternoon.
