Worth knowing about Slovenia
From the Alps to the Adriatic: Slovenia is a country in the south of central Europe, bordering Austria to the north, Hungary to the north-east, Croatia to the south-east and the Adriatic Sea and Italy to the west. Although small, Slovenia has four different landscapes and three different climate zones. To the northwest are the high mountains of the Julian Alps, the Karawanken and the Steiner Alps. The Soĉa, one of the country's main rivers, rises precisely from the Julian Alps.
To the southwest, the landscape is shaped by the Mediterranean Sea. However, there is one thing that applies to the whole country: the mountains and the hilly landscape of Slovenia with more than 10,000km of signposted hiking trails will warm the heart of any hiker. Enjoy the peaceful moments of the open, unspoiled nature on your hiking holiday in Slovenia.
The Alpe-Adria trail in Slovenia
Explore and enjoy the most beautiful places in Slovenia's only national park, Triglav National Park, and the Soĉa - Europe's most beautiful river. The Alps-Adriatic Trail hiking tour starts in Kranjska Gora. From here, the first stage goes high up - to the Vršič mountain pass, 1,618 metres above sea level, which is also where today's hike begins. On foot, the route now takes you down to the source of the Soĉa River, also known as the Soul of the Julian Alps, and on along the Soĉa Trail to Trenta. The next day the tour continues to Bovec over spectacular suspension bridges and through the Soĉa Gorge. The following stages make first to Drežnica and on the fifth day to Tolmin. The last hiking day of the tour ends with a wonderful hike to Hlevnik and the Kolovrat ridge, from where there is a pleasant descent to Reguio Solarie, a former border crossing to Italy.
Hiking the ridges of the Julian Alps
Our hiking holiday in the Julian Alps also begins in Kranjska Gora, from where you will hike in the beautiful national park. The beautiful views and the impressive nature are a great experience. The tour ends at the incredibly beautiful Bohinj Lake. The hiking holiday in Slovenia is not a very demanding hike, so most people will be able to cope with the hikes and the lovely hotels.

Climate and nature in Slovenia
Although Slovenia is a small country, there are three climate zones. The northern regions are characterised by an alpine or sub-alpine climate. Here, hiking in high summer is ideal as it does not get too hot. The eastern part of Slovenia has a Pannonian climate, which can mean very cold winters and hot summers. The southern part of the country - especially the part bordering the Adriatic Sea - has a Mediterranean climate.
Because Slovenia has several different climates, it is one of the most biodiverse countries in the EU. Slovenia is working hard to safeguard its rich plant and animal life, with 35% of the country's land area and 312 animal and plant species already protected.
Culture and tradition
Slovenia is also diverse in terms of traditions and customs. The dances, traditional costumes and typical folk music vary from region to region. Folk music is popular throughout the country and is an important part of local festivals. Enjoy the sound of the accordion and strings - live of course - while you dance the polka or waltz. On a walking holiday in Slovenia you can explore the country's cultural treasury and meet the people who give culture a human face. Look forward to a colourful adventure on a walking holiday in Slovenia - where we will of course transport your luggage between hotels.
What to taste in Slovenia?
Slovenian cuisine is as varied as the landscapes of this beautiful country. Neighbouring countries such as Austria, Hungary and Italy have all influenced Slovenian cuisine, which is based on fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy products and wild berries and herbs. You should definitely try Slovenian specialities, such as the Sweet Gold - internationally renowned honey from Slovenia, the local pumpkin seed oil, the good wines or the herb liqueur 'Pelinkovac'. You should also try the delicacy from Bled: the traditional Bled cream cake made of delicious puff pastry, whipped cream and vanilla cream. You could call it a pilgrimage to Bled.
Did you know?
- There is a ‘wishing bell’ on Bled Island? Taking the old wooden boat to Bled Island is a special experience. As you sail towards the island, you can start thinking about what to wish for when you reach the so-called ‘Wish Island’. In the Church of Our Lady on the island, in the beautiful church tower, you'll find the ‘wishing bell’. When the bell rings, think carefully about what you wish for and trust that your wish will be heard.
- That there are thousands of hiking trails in the Julian Alps? In the Julian Alps, the country's largest nature reserve, there are approximately 7000km of signposted and maintained trails spread over an area of 880 square kilometres. So there are plenty of opportunities for a great hiking holiday.
- More than half of Slovenia's land area is forest? Approximately 58% of Slovenia is covered in forest. So it's no surprise that Slovenia was the first country in the world to be named a ‘Green Travel Destination’.
- That a famous Slovenian delicacy has been eaten in space? The famous Slovenian ‘Carniolan’ sausage was eaten in space in 2006.
