As the most southern situated region of Portugal, Algarve has a wonderful warm climate and a stunning coastline running from Sagres in the west, where the Atlantic wash over the cliffs surrounding the majestic lighthouse, to the Vila Real de Santo António in the east, which is located right at the border between Portugal and Spain.
Ecovia do Algarve is a cycling route that takes you 237 km from west to east. This cycling holiday takes you through a different variety of culture and nature than otherwise seen in Portugal. You will pass through small charming coastal villages and the larger and more important cities of Algarve. You will also come past fantastic beaches and unique wetlands where shorebirds, including flamingos, may be seen.
The route leads you along trails of protected natural areas, and takes you along minor roads and dirt roads. The route is relatively flat, with a few lighter hilly stretches.
This beautiful village is located in the far southwestern corner of Europe, next to the Sudoeste Alentejo Natural Park and Costa Vincentina. Sagres is a traditional southern Portuguese village full of historical monuments. A visit to the large lighthouse is recommended, where the views of the Atlantic Ocean are outstanding. Likewise, the Sagres Fort, located at Ponta de Sagres, is a great experience.
If you wish, you can opt for a transfer from Faro Airport on the booking form.

You will cycle through the charming municipality of Vila do Bispo, with its dramatic coastline, and the mystique from the town of Sagres providing an experience of wild nature and a rich historical heritage that is left beautiful and untouched. The stage ends in Lagos, which is one of the most southern cities of Portugal and the most historically interesting in the Algarve. It also has some friendly and lovely beaches and a great selection of restaurants and cafes.

The beach at Meia today gives you the first opportunity to take a dip in the refreshing sea. Here, at low tide, you can observe the countless beachgoers looking for delicacies. In Odiáxere, a visit to the 16th-century church is a great experience and in Alvor, a stroll through the Morabito de São Pedro market and through the narrow alleys of the historic centre is a real treat. Order the catch of the day at one of the many seafood restaurants. Continue cycling along the coast and enjoy the stunning views of the sea. Take a break on the beautiful sandy beach of Praia da Rocha before arriving at your destination Portimão in the afternoon.

Continue past olive, cypress, orange, fig and cork oak trees to Lagoa. Here we recommend tasting a traditional Portuguese cake and visiting the small church of Nossa Senhora da Rocha, perched on a ledge above the sea. Long sandy beaches follow you on your way to one of the Algarve's most famous holiday resorts, Albufeira, which is also your destination for the day.

In Vilamoura, you'll pass one of the country's largest marinas before cycling through pine forests towards the Ria Formosa Natural Park. The nature park frames a fascinating lagoon landscape that is constantly changing due to currents, weather and, not least, water conditions. The impressive landscape is home to a wide variety of birdlife. From there, the Algarve's capital Faro appears in the distance. Today, the Ria Formosa Natural Park with its lagoons is your companion again. You'll cycle through the pine forest at Monte Gordo beach and the dune forest at Vila Real de Santo António to the Guadiane - the border river between Portugal and Spain. Follow the river northwards for a short distance before continuing over gentle hills, past orange and olive groves back towards Tavira. You can shorten the journey by taking the regional train back from Vila Real De Santo António to Tavira, bikes can be taken on the train - tickets are purchased locally.
Today can also be used for pure relaxation. The area in and around Santa Luzia and Tavira offers an exciting mix of interesting architecture, such as the seven-arched Roman bridge crossing the Gilhão River and no less than 37 churches in the city. Do the count yourself. You can also cycle between the characteristic salt extraction lakes, with their varying colours, or stroll along the fine beaches such as Praia do Barril at Santa Luzia. Santa Luzia is also known as the Octopus City, as the town's fishing history has made it famous for octopuses. Every self-respecting restaurant has a version of ‘Atlantic octopus’ on their delicatessen menu, and it tastes amazing.
