Walking holiday Hadrian's Wall

8 Days / 7 Nights
Moderate

Hadrian's Wall Path opened in 2003 and proved an instant success with walkers from both the UK and abroad. The route follows Northern Europe's largest surviving Roman monument, built by order of Emperor Hadrian between 122 and 128 AD to protect the northern end of the Roman Empire.

The path crosses the country from coast to coast from Wallsend, near Newcastle, through the rolling borderlands of Northumberland, on to the historic city of Carlisle and finally to the flat plains of the Solway coast.

Hadrian's Wall Path was the very first National Trail in England to follow the course of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. To ensure that the integrity of the wall was in no way compromised, an archaeologist was present every time a sign or road marker was driven into the ground. This meant that it took 10 years to open the Hadrian's Wall route to the public. That's four more years than it took the Roman Army's 2nd and 6th legions to build the wall itself. But anyone who has ever walked the trail will testify that it was worth all the work. An amazing walking holiday.

The most dramatic part of the walk is in the centre of the route, where the scenery is most impressive and where large parts of the wall still remain. This is also where some of the best preserved fortresses are located. It's easy to imagine what these windswept moors must have looked like many years ago when the wall, interrupted only by forts and towers, wound its way through the rolling Northumberland countryside.

With the Romans gone, the wall fell into disrepair and many of the stones were used to build the churches, monasteries and priories you see around England today. However, the legacy of the wall lives on in the names of the towns along the route; Wallsend, Wallhouses, Walton and even Oldwall are just a few examples.

More about the route

The hike is one of the easier routes in the UK, and mainly follows well-trodden paths in fine terrain. Please alsonote that our version of the tour runs from east to west, which is what the official guidebook for the tour suggests. However, it is also possible to reverse the tour, so that you start in the west and end in the east. Some people prefer this, as there is a theory that you often have the wind at your back when you walk. If you want to walk from west to east, just let us know.

Itinerary

Here you can see the programme for the week.

You'll arrive in Tynemouth, where you'll have your first overnight stay before your tour starts tomorrow.

Hotel (example): No. 61

The tour starts in Wallsend near Newcastle upon Tyne. You'll pass Segedunum - a Roman fort with an interesting museum that's worth a visit if you have time. The route follows the River Tyne into the city to the rebuilt central quay, past the Millennium Bridge and on to the Baltic Arts Centre and the distinctive Sage Building. The route then continues along the river to Newburn or Heddon on the Wall on the outskirts of Newcastle.

Hotel (example): Heddon Lodge

Today you'll follow the path that continues pleasantly through Tyne Valley Country Park before heading up to the town of Heddon and onwards through the rolling countryside. Towers and milestones become part of the landscape. The final 3km is characterised by a descent through charming parkland to the North Tyne Valley and the picturesque villages of Wall, Chollerford and Humshaugh.

Hotel (example): Linden House

Today you'll reach Northumberland National Park with sweeping views and rolling moorland. The route first climbs steadily past towers and the Roman fort of Brocolitia; it then becomes more steeply undulating as you reach the Whin Sill escarpment. The views of open moorland, the South Tyne Valley, the Pennines and the wall itself following the ridges ahead are breathtaking. The route passes the well-preserved Housesteads Fort and continues in a similarly dramatic fashion to Twice Brewed.

Hotel (example): Vallum Lodge

The day starts in Twice Brewed where, if there is time, it is possible to explore the Roman forts of Vindolanda or Housesteads. When you're ready to move on, the route continues to follow the escarpment over the rugged cliffs of Winshield, which is just as impressive as the previous section. It passes the remains of Great Chester's Fort and Roman Army Museum and continues to the pretty villages of Greenhead and Gilsland.

Hotel (example): Country B&B

Just beyond Gilsland, you'll reach the fort of Birdoswald, after which the route continues high above the steep Irthington Gorge before beginning a gradual descent at the village of Banks. Rich farmland and parkland replace the moorland as the route drops steadily through the villages of Walton and Irthington before reaching the River Eden on the final stretch into the historic border town of Carlisle

Hotel (example): Courtfield

You're ready to embark on your last day of walking before you say goodbye to the wall. The final stretch is a complete contrast to all that has gone before; first along the banks of Eden and then across the pancake-flat salt marshes of the Solway Firth. The mountains of the Lake District are visible to the south and Scotland is just across the water to the north. Savour the stunning views before the tour ends in Solway.

Hotel (example): Wallsend

Say goodbye to Hadrian's Wall and head for home or further adventure, depending on your plans.
