- Walking from Barbaresco to Barolo -

Piedmont is the second-largest region in Italy and has so much to offer! You experience the relaxed and casual atmosphere while you explore the Langhe-area on foot. The terrain on this walking holiday is exciting with the fantastic hills covered with a beautiful green carpet of vines as far as the eye can see. These are not just any vineyards. This is the place where some of the world’s finest and most expensive wines are created – and you will have ample opportunity to taste some of them in some of the wine cellars in and around the small villages.

Many of the villages in Piedmont have a vast history going all the way back to the middle ages where the stone houses were built on hilltops – to easily spot incoming invaders. Today this means that you will have an amazing view of the picturesque valleys, the neighboring villages situated on small hilltops adding to the charm of this amazing area. A perfect walking holiday in Italy.

When you have had your fill of the beautiful nature and culture it is time to enjoy the fantastic culinary experience which makes this region particularly interesting. Besides the amazing wines from areas such as Barolo, Barbaresco or Asti this area is known for the Nutella-hazelnuts, white truffles, risotto and amazing local cheeses. In other words: you will have plenty of chances to indulge in the many treats when you arrive from the days walk.

More about the route

The terrain is hilly, and the route takes you through vineyards and forests. The daily distances vary and can take up to five hours. The route guides you along ancient mule tracks, gravel paths and incidentally along asphalted sections. We recommend a good basic level of fitness.

Itinerary

Here you can see the programme for the week.

Welcome to the truffle-metropolis, Alba! This medieval town is known for the many palaces and towers and it is certainly worth it to go for a stroll around town. Alba was also the birthplace of Nutella and the large Ferrero-factory has its own corner of town.

The first day of walking takes you from Alba along the Tarano river to the village Barbaresco – the first wine-town on this walking holiday. In Barbaresco it is all about quality wines. We suggest that you try a glass from Barolo’s smaller brother in Enoteca Regionale which is placed in the old San Donato church.

The route takes you through the characteristic landscape of the Langhe-region, along vast vineyards and into picturesque Neive. You stay the night in Treiso located in the middle of Langa del Barbaresco. This town has been a popular holiday destination since Roman times.

Hotel (example): Domus Langhe

On your way towards the small village Canta, you walk along Rocche di Sette Fratelli – a deep gorge – which cuts beautifully through the beautiful vineyards. You then walk towards San Bovo where you can enjoy a spectacular panorama view before finally reaching the flower town of Castino which is beautifully placed on a hilltop between the river valleys Bormida and Belbo. In the middle ages this village was a wealthy center with three monasteries and today you can admire the region’s very first truffle grove for tourists in the region. From here the route takes you to a small hilltop between chestnut- and hazelnut trees to Cravanzana.

From the hazelnut groves the route takes you through a hilly terrain up through the upper part of the Belbo river valley and via Feisoglio to Niella Belbo. The architectural expression in this medieval village was formed by the march of Napoleon – hence the name “dei francesci”. After having enjoyed a hilltop with an amazing view over the sleepy villages and old ruins, you reach San Benedetto and the nearby lake. A short transfer takes you to the famous flower town Bossolasco.

Hotel (example): Da Fabiana

Today the terrain will be slightly more hilly as you walk along the hazelnut groves to the village Sarravalle Langhe. From here the route goes through Bric della Vacca and vineyards to Roddino. After a short rest at the St. Mary Church you walk along the path which snakes uphill to the medieval castle Serralunga d’Alba in the village Sinio where you will also spend the night.

Hotel (example): Le Arcate

Todays walk leads you through bright hazelnut groves and lush forests to the almost magically situated Monforte d’Alba. The impressive clock tower and Scrampi-palace can be seen from afar. In the medieval Monforte we recommend a stroll through the small alleys and that you enjoy a snack in one of the many restaurants and wine cellars. You continue your walk with an impressive view over the Novello valley. You are about to end up in one of Piedmont’s most famous wine villages, Barolo – where we naturally have included a wine tasting.

Hotel (example): Barolo

You start your day by walking along some of the world’s most famous vineyards before you continue to the idyllic village La Morra – also know as the Langhe-balcony because of the beautiful panorama view where you can see the entire Barolo region. On a clear day you can even see the alps and Monte Viso. You pass the castles Verduno and Roddi before you are back in Alba where you will enjoy your last night of the tour.

Your walking holiday in Piedmont is now over. You check out of the hotel in the morning.
