Family walking holiday from South Tyrol to the Dolomites

Hiking holiday for the whole family in South Tyrol

7 Days / 6 Nights
Easy

Walk from Resia to Merano – suitable for everyone, no matter your shoe size!
Wonderful high-altitude trails and gurgling Waalweg irrigation channels accompany you on your hike, while the glistening lakes invite you for a swim. From the witches' cave to the Teufelsplatte, you will discover many exciting things on these legendary trails.

It's not just the impressive views of South Tyrol's largest national park but also the characteristic irrigation channels that make this hike in South Tyrol a fantastic family adventure.

"Waalwege," or irrigation channel trails, are popular family-friendly paths because they follow waterways and are not very steep. In the past, their purpose was to irrigate the meadows of South Tyrol. They provide plenty of fun for children, as the gushing irrigation channels and large waterways create opportunities for lots of water play during the hikes.

When you're not walking along the shady trails, many adventures await you: rope courses, lakes, adventure trails, and fascinating museums.

About the route
We recommend that children are at least 8 years old to complete this tour. There are also younger children who will be able to do the tour, but it is up to the parents to assess if the tour is suitable for your particular child. It is important that everyone has a good basic level of fitness and is able to hike for a few hours at a time. The route consists of well-established hiking trails, often along irrigation channels. Parts of the route are on tarmac roads and walks can be shortened by using public transport.

Highlights of the tour

  • Most hikes follow water channels - suitable for families
  • Walk through apple orchards and lush vineyards
  • Sparkling lakes and big mountains
  • Paths with lots of information about the mythological world of South Tyrol

Itinerary

See the day-by-day itinerary below.

Welcome to Vinschgau! The steel blue lake Resia and the famous tower sticking out of the water will make you feel welcome. Not only kitesurfers and other water sports fanatics roam this very inviting lake. Enjoy the first hours in this border triangle region in the sun and take in the mountain views before you start hiking through the lush green South Tyrol tomorrow.

Hotel (example): Hotel Panorama 2000

The journey starts with a bus ride along the wonderfully glittering Reschensee, passing the former church tower in the dammed lake. From St. Valentin, you will walk through the Talaiwald forest up to the charming village and down to the fisherman's huts at Haidersee.

From here, you continue your hike along the lakeshore, crossing wooden bridges and footbridges. From secluded spots, you can watch the many ducks swimming in the lake. The trail continues across mountain meadows and grazing areas to the mountain lake, then along the Sonnensteig trail down to Burgusio.

Hotel (example): Das Moriggl

Walk along the Sonnensteig, an exciting irrigation canal trail where you can learn a lot about the mythological world of Vinschgau. While hiking, you can enjoy the view of the snow-capped mountain peaks as a backdrop. High above Malles, you follow Oberwaal and continue your hike across beautiful mountain meadows to "Ganglegg." Take a tour through the most explored Bronze and Iron Age settlement in the entire Alpine region.

Finally, you will cross impressive bridges and wooden walkways over the gorge to your destination for the day, Silandro. An impressive ride on the Vinschgaubahn takes you the last stretch to your overnight stay.

Hotel (example): Goldene Rose

In the morning, you follow the panoramic high trail along the sunny slopes to Vezzan. Brave hikers can climb the suspension bridge that spans the shady gorge over the Tisser mountain stream.
The Latschander Waalweg trail also runs spectacularly high above the Etschtal valley, leading you directly through the vineyards to the castle in Kastelbell.
Afterward, you can enjoy a relaxing train ride on the Vinschgaubahn through South Tyrol's colorful landscape to your accommodation, where you can take a dip in the adventure pool.

Hotel (example): Hotel Kleinkunst

High above the valley, you hike along the rocky Sonnenberg Panorama Trail. As the name promises, you are rewarded with breathtaking views of the vast orchards in the valley below, along with warm rays of sunshine on your face.

A cozy snack station by the mountain stream beckons before you cross an airy suspension bridge to Parcines/Partschins. From here, you continue through fruit orchards and vineyards to your destination.

For a more relaxed route, you can choose Rittersteig, a varied path through forests and vineyards, where you can also discover a medieval knight's castle.

Hotel (example): Hotel Botango

Today, your final stage takes you along the watercourse through tunnels and shady forest areas. On the varied Algunder Waalweg trail, you follow the soothing flow of the water through the vineyards and enjoy the view over the Adige Valley and the mountains.

High above the town, you walk along the world-famous Tappeiner Promenade, where even palm trees and cacti grow, and continue to the sunny spa town of Merano.

Hotel (example): Hotel Flora

The journey is now over and it's time to go home or further out into the world. If you would like to stay an extra night in the last hotel of the tour, this is certainly possible.
