Itinerary
Here you can see the programme for the tour.
You'll arrive in St Bees, where you'll have your first overnight stay before the tour starts tomorrow.
Hotel (example): The Manor Inn
Today is the first walking day of the tour, taking you from the quaint coastal town of St Bees to Ennerdale, which marks the start of the beautiful Lake District. Today you'll walk over impressive coastal sandstone cliffs before heading inland past beautiful fields and green hills. Towards the end of the day, you'll reach Dent Fell, the entrance to the Lake District. You'll cross Blackhow Bridge before the climb begins. On the way back down, you'll pass Raven Crag, which offers stunning views of the Thirlmere Reservoir.
Don't forget to stop at the Blakeley Moss Stone Circle - a small stone circle dating back to the Bronze Age.
Hotel (example): Shepherds Arms
You have another great day of walking ahead of you today as you head from Ennerdale to Rosthwaite. You'll be travelling through the stunning Lake District. One of the first things you'll come across on your way is Ennerdale Water, the westernmost of the Lake District's many lakes. Along the way, you'll have a beautiful view of the many mountains towering on the horizon. At the end of the day's route you'll reach Jonny Wood, a beautiful wooded area with views of the River Derwent.
Hotel (example): The Langstrath
Today is a short day compared to the previous two days. The day starts in Rosthwaite - a charming village located on the River Derwent. Today is a great day with many beautiful views of the Lake District. You'll first walk up to Greenup Gill and then descend again towards Grasmere. The day offers many beautiful views as you move further and further inland.
Hotel (example): Heidi's Grasmere Lodge
Today is another day of climbs where you can choose to either hike over the pass at Grisedale tarn or for the more adventurous, via Helvellyn - England's third highest mountain. The tour ends at Patterdale, located on the shores of Lake Ullswater. Along the way, you'll pass Seat Sandal - an impressive hillside that sits beautifully alongside its more famous neighbours Eastern Fells, Helvellyn and Fairfield.
Hotel (example): Old Water View
The most remote walk of the tour takes you from Ullwater over Kidsty Pike, with a great viewpoint over the Lakeland fells and then down to Haweswater and on to Shap. Kidsty Pike forms part of the ridge between Randale and Riggindale, rising above the Hawswater reservoir, which can be seen in the distance. On the way, you'll pass Kidsty Howes, where the trail begins to descend towards Bowderthwaite, located on the banks of Hawswater. The descent is steep and winding through the rocks, so a pair of walking poles can be helpful here.
Hotel (example): New Ing Lodge
You've now left the Lake District and are travelling even further inland. Today is neither as long nor as steep as the previous days. The landscape has become more hilly than mountainous and you mainly follow beautiful moorland paths until you reach the lovely village of Orton. On the way to Orton you'll pass the ancient stone circle called Wicker Street - look carefully as it almost gets lost among the other stones and rocks in the area.
Hotel (example): Westermorland Hotel
Today you'll head to the pretty market town of Kirkby Stephen. On the way you'll pass many historical sites. These include Begin Hill - a 310 metre high hilltop that is particularly famous for its many Roman settlements. Severalls and Intake are the names of two of these settlements and they are both listed monuments. You'll also pass another stone circle, Gamelands Stone Circle, which is one of the largest stone circles in the Cumbria area.
Hotel (example): Lockholme
After Kirkby Stephen, the route heads up to Nine Standards, a relatively easy climb at 662 metres. You'll climb high above the Eden Valley before heading into Swaledale - one of the longest and quietest areas in the Yorkshire Dales. You'll walk across open moorland, past cosy field barns and down into beautiful valleys, following riverside paths.
Hotel (example): Butt house
Today you'll walk through much of the same landscape as you did yesterday. Beautiful moorland opens up before you as you make your way towards your next stop, Reeth. Along the way, you'll pass Buzzard Scar - a mesmerising cliff that hangs over where the Swinner Gill Valley and Swaledale Valley meet. You'll also pass the famous Surrender Bridge, known from the popular 1978 TV series ‘People and Fool’.
Hotel (example): Ivy Cottage
Today we head to Richmond - a beautiful city and the largest you'll visit on the route. It's definitely worth taking a moment to explore the old cobbled market square overlooking the old castle built back in the 11th century. Before you get to Richmond, however, you'll need to get your legs going and walk the 18km through relatively fallen moorland that slowly gives way to cosy woodlands.
Hotel (example): Nuns Cottage
You've now reached the ‘flat part’ of the journey. Today is mostly on country roads with views of fields. The route out of Richmond takes you past the old castle, which is a great start to the day's walk.
Hotel (example): Inglenook
Today continues on relatively flat terrain towards Ingleby Arncliffe, passing the Vale of Mowbray - a stretch of low-lying land between the North York Moors and Hambleton Hills to the east and the Yorkshire Dales to the west.
Hotel (example): Park House
Ingleby Arncliffe marks the start of the North York Moors and the flat part of the walk has now come to an end. The route first passes through woodland and then follows the steep northern edge of the moors with beautiful panoramic views to the north. On today's walk you'll pass the Wain Stones. Stop and take a look at them. There are carvings in the stones that show cup and ring markings from the Bronze Age.
Hotel (example): Wainstone
You're now approaching the end of your journey with only a few days of walking left. Today is the last big climb of the route, which will take you to Urra Moor and around beautiful Farndale before you begin the long descent to the coast.
Hotel (example): The Lion Inn
The Highland section of the route is now complete and you'll descend to the River Esk at Glaisdale and follow it to Egton Bridge and Grosmont, considered by many to be the most beautiful villages on the route.
Hotel (example): Horseshoe hotel
It's time for the last hiking day of the trip, and although it may feel a little sad at this point, this is also the time to look at each other and high-five - you're almost there. Littlebeck and its forest provide a final taste of the picturesque landscape before more farmland leads to the sea cliffs. Follow them south to Robin Hoods Bay, a fishing village famous for its narrow, steep streets and distinctive roofscapes.
Hotel (example): Lee Side hotel
The trip is now over and you're heading home or on to your next adventure, depending on what your plans are.
