The Lechweg Trail, 6 days

6 Days / 5 Nights
Moderate

A unique nature experience awaits you on our hiking holiday along the Lechweg trail: for around 75 km you follow the sparkling Lech River from Steeg, through one of Europe's last wild river landscapes all the way to the Lechfall waterfall in Füssen in the Bavarian Allgäu region.

Along the way, you'll not only experience the untamed and rugged beauty of the Alpine border regions, but you'll also hike through one of Europe's largest ibex colonies and marvel at a waterfall that magically disappears every year and rises again. You'll cross the spectacular pedestrian suspension bridge and admire the palaces of King Louis. The magical turquoise colour of the Lech River and its thunderous roar will be your constant companion on this walking holiday.

Travelling with a dog
It is possible to bring your dog(s) on this holiday. Simply describe the dog's breed and shoulder height in the message box when you book your holiday.

THe route

You will walk on easy, well-maintained hiking trails, forest paths and some forest and gravel roads. A good basic fitness level is required for all daily tours. You always have the option to interrupt longer tours by taking the bus at any time. On some parts of the tours it is necessary to be sure-footed. The spectacular suspension bridges can be easily avoided if necessary.

Itinerary

See the day-by-day itinerary below.

You'll arrive at your first hotel in Steeg or the surrounding area and enjoy the rest of the day here.

Hotel (example): Styrolerhof Hotel & Wirtshaus

On the Jochweg trail, you'll walk leisurely along the Lech River until you reach the beautiful village of Holzgau, characterised by its colourful painted houses. Here, a special highlight awaits you as you cross one of Europe's longest and most spectacular pedestrian suspension bridges.

Continue through flowering meadows and forest paths to Elbigenalp, the geographical centre of the Lechtal Valley and the heart of traditional wood crafts.

Hotel (example): Traditionsgasthof Stern

A picturesque nature reserve leads you to Häselgehr, where we highly recommend visiting the beautiful parish church with its opulent interior before continuing uphill to the Doser waterfall. There are many legends and stories surrounding this mysterious natural phenomenon. Via a high path with stunning views of the ‘wild river’ you'll reach Stanzach, a quiet village set in the centre of a stunning mountain world.

Hotel (example): Föhrenhof

Today the River Lech shows its wild side once again: hike through a rugged river landscape, past Lechzopf to Forchach, where another suspension bridge beckons brave hikers to cross it. Over the Johannesbrücke bridge and through the Moosberg nature reserve you hike to Weissenbach, cross the Rotlech River and reach the quiet little town of Höfen via small paths along the river.

Hotel (example): Die Lilie

Via the panoramic trail, you'll reach a beautiful viewpoint high up at the Costaries Chapel. Pass the glittering Frauensee lake and continue into the ‘Pflacher Au’. Here you can enjoy an impressive panoramic view of the river wetlands from the Bird Tower, a 20 metre high wooden structure. Soon you can already see the castles of Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein in front of you in the distance! The impressive Lechfall waterfall finally marks the end of the Lechweg trail. In Füssen, the final treat awaits when you visit the royal castles.

Hotel (example): Hirsch

Your journey is now over. You will leave the hotel during the morning.
