Worth knowing about Italy

Italian climate

The climate in Italy is incredibly varied. In South Tyrol, hikers can expect a mild mountain climate and as you would expect in the Alps, winters are cold. That's why our hiking season in the Alps starts in May or June, when the snow is typically gone.
The climate gets milder if you head a little south towards Lake Garda, for example. If you go even further south to Liguria and Piedmont, the climate becomes Mediterranean. Southern Italy gets very hot in summer, so the perfect time for hiking in this area is spring and autumn. It is in pleasant heat that hiking is most beautiful.

Italian cuisine

Pizza, pasta, risotto, carpaccio - need we go on? We love Italian cuisine! Every region has its own variations of the world-famous dishes, so you can't really expect to lose weight on a walking holiday in Italy. Pizza is probably the world's most famous dish and it was invented in Italy, specifically Naples. Pizza was already on the table in the 18th century and probably even earlier than that. We know that the inventor of Pizza Margherita was Signor Raffaele Esposito, who worked for the Brandi restaurant in Naples. He was instructed to serve a special dish to King Umberto I and his wife Margherita. The rest is history.

Pizza Napoletana

The most famous pizza in the world - named after the king's wife - consists of red tomatoes, white mozzarella and green basil. The national colours of Italy.
Today there is even an association, Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana, whose mission is to preserve the preparation of the true Neapolitan pizza. Pizza parlours all over the world are members of the association and can boast of serving the real thing. The association monitors the recipe and preparation with regular spot checks. In Italy you'll also find Pizza Romana, which is very thin and crispy, Pizza Genovese, which is a variation of focaccia with a thicker base and Pizza Al Taglio, which is served in slices and can often be bought on the street. We have to be honest and say that it doesn't matter which pizza you choose because they all taste great.
