The right stages for children
The perfect cycling holiday with children starts with carefully selecting the right cycling route. Of course, it's important to take into account your child's age and cycling experience. Choosing a route that's too demanding can quickly lead to frustration and stress for parents - two things that certainly don't belong on a family cycling holiday. That's why we've carefully selected all the family-friendly cycling routes, taking into account length and whether children will enjoy the ride. So nothing stands in the way of a carefree cycling holiday with the kids.
Route selection
To avoid overwhelming the children, the route should be largely flat with few elevation changes. However, there may be hills here and there, as this can give children a sense of tackling a challenge and overcoming it. Cycling routes along rivers are a really good choice as they naturally go downhill and are incredibly beautiful. However, there are other routes that are flat and mostly downhill in other areas.
How long should the stage be
Besides the nature and the terrain, the distance is also an important parameter. The greater the distance you have to cover, the longer you have to stay on the bike and the harder the day will be. Breaks are particularly important on a family cycling holiday and they provide variety and extra adventure during the day. We recommend that you take more breaks than you think to ensure that the children enjoy the ride.
The length of the stage should always be chosen according to the experience and shape of the children. A stage of 45 kilometres can be done by children who are experienced cyclists. Shorter routes of 15 kilometres or more certainly have their charm too, because they open up a lot of extra activities. On cycling holidays where you cycle many days in a row, it is also nice that the stages vary in length.
In general, we think stages of 30-35km are suitable for most families.
Family friendly accommodation
We have specific requirements for the accommodation we choose for our family cycling holidays: it must fit the length of the stage and be close to the route, there must be a safe place to park the bikes and enough space for them, and luggage transport must work smoothly.
For family cycling holidays, it is also important that the accommodation is family-friendly and has large rooms. Where possible, we always book hotels that have a swimming pool, playground or other family facilities so that children can really enjoy their stay.
Adventures along the route
A cycling holiday with children becomes a perfect family holiday when there are many highlights and adventures along the routes. That way, every day the kids have something extra to look forward to besides the cycling itself. It can be little things like the opportunity to swim in lakes along the route or playgrounds, museums, nature experiences and animals that ensure the trip is fun for all children.
Bike rental for children
The most important equipment for a cycling holiday is of course the bike itself. For a cycling holiday to be fun, the bike must meet all the necessary standards and must be robust so that it does not require maintenance during the trip. The bike should be the right size for both children and adults. If it is too big or too small, the pedalling will quickly become inefficient, the saddle uncomfortable and cycling generally less safe.
As well as good quality bikes and e-bikes for adults, we also offer bike hire for children of all ages. You can choose from the following for your children:
- Children's bike with 21 gears (without backpedal brake - sizes 20/24/26 inches)
- Tag-along (without backpedal brake - 20 inch)
- Child trailer for 1-2 children
- Children's bike (20 inch) + Follow Me tandem

As with all our cycling holidays, our cycling holidays for families also include our thorough travel documents. In them you'll find maps, route descriptions, city maps and extra information. Luggage transfer
Luggage transport is included in the price of all our cycling holidays for families. We know that a family holiday means carrying a lot of luggage and on this tour it won't be a problem at all. You can just fill your suitcases and we'll arrange for them to be driven from hotel to hotel.
