Cycling from Porto to Lisbon, 8 days

8 Days / 7 Nights

This delicious cycling tour connects the two cities of Porto and Lisbon. Discover many impressive cultural sites as you cycle through lush nature on lovely coastal cycle paths. The journey starts in Porto, a World Heritage Site and one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Savour a glass of port wine and other culinary delights.

Explore Aveiro (the Venice of Portugal with its canals and salt pools), the lively coastal city of Figueira da Foz, Nazaré, where the waves can be as high as houses, and much more. Full of impressions, you'll arrive in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. The historic city is impressive and has plenty of attractions directly on the Tagus River. A wonderful and varied cycling holiday awaits you.

Porto and Lisbon alone are worth the journey, but you'll also find much more to admire along the way, such as steep cliffs, sandy beaches and picturesque city centres to name but a few.

The route

Generally a slightly hilly ride with very few steep sections. A wonderful route on cycle paths, field roads and side streets with little traffic. Small sections are on slightly busier roads. There are also some longer stretches where you cycle on gravel roads.

Itinerary

See the day-by-day itinerary below.

You'll arrive at your first hotel in Porto. Here you'll be handed your bikes. Take a stroll along the banks of the Douro River and be sure to try a glass of the famous port wine today.

Hotel (example): Neya Porto

In the morning, cross the Douro River and cycle past the port wine cellars. Then head away from the hustle and bustle of the city towards the calm Atlantic coast. Past fine sandy beaches and through vast pine forests, you'll head south. Today's final destination is well known for its hospitality and excellent fish dishes. Enjoy your holiday!

Hotel (example): Furadouro Beach & Spa

There's plenty of nature to admire on today's stage. You'll cycle through the Aveiro Lagoon and while doing so you'll be surrounded by water. Birdwatch in the São Jacinto Dunes Natural Reserve or watch the salt extraction at the saltworks. A ferry will then take you to Aveiro, a place considered the ‘Venice of Portugal’ due to its canals and famous Moliceiro boats.

Hotel (example): Melia Aveiro

The cycle path along the Aveiro lagoon takes you to Costa Nova. The colourful beach houses are a popular backdrop for holiday photos. Cycling slowly southwards, you'll soon arrive at your destination for the day. Stroll along the kilometres of sandy beach and soak up the atmosphere of this peaceful seaside resort.

Hotel (example): Macarico Beach

You cycle through a dune landscape on soft hills. Crickets chirp in the pine forest and soon you'll see the first cliff in front of you. The road leads spectacularly towards the lighthouse Cabo Mondego and then on to Figueira da Foz, a charming little town with plenty of restaurants, decorative alleys, slow cafés and of course a beautiful beach.

Hotel (example): Costa de Prata

Start the day with a transfer to regal Sintra, where you'll find many palaces and stately homes. From here it's a steep descent back towards the coast. Marvellous views of the sea and dreamy sandy coves make the occasional climbs on the way to Cascais well worth it. At the end of the day, you'll be welcomed by the beautiful promenade to the stylish town of Cascais.

Hotel (example): Eurostars

The cycle path runs straight along the coast to Estoril. You'll soon reach the mouth of the Tagus River. The famous Belem Tower is right on the way and you'll cycle under Lisbon's landmark, the mighty suspension bridge. Continue along the banks of the Tagus River to your hotel in the modern neighbourhood of Oriente.

Hotel (example): Olissippo Oriente

Your journey is now over. You will leave your hotel in Lisbon during the morning.
