Itinerary
Porto, a beautiful city with a historic centre with over 150 listed UNESCO monuments. Depending on when you arrive, you should spend some time to explore the city centre and see some of the beautiful sights such as the city's cathedral and the historic Lello bookshop, known for its stunning architecture, with perhaps one of the most beautiful staircases in Europe.
During this day, there will be a welcome briefing where you will be given bikes and route descriptions.
Hotel (example): Hotel Porto Trindade
Depart Porto and start cycling the Portuguese Coastal Road to Santiago along the Portuguese coast along wooden bridges and small roads past wide sandy beaches, nature reserves and fishing villages on your way to the fascinating town of Vila do Conde.
Hotel (example): Hotel Brazão
Ride through residential areas to the holiday resort of Povoa de Varzim. Continue cycling along the sea and beaches, then head inland past farmland, forests and villages to Fão. Cross the Cávado River to reach the low-lying holiday town of Esposende.
Much of the day is spent inland, cycling through a series of villages, countryside and forest areas with river and mountain views. On the way to Viana do Castelo across the iron bridge over the Lima River, there are magnificent views of the valley and estuary. Take some time to enjoy this small historic town.
Hotel (example): Hotel Rali
Start the day towards the beach town of Vila Praia de Âncora, crossing a wooded hill to get there, and continue on a coastal cycle path that takes you to Moledo and continues inland to the beautiful town of Caminha. Here, take the ferry across the Minho River, which is the natural border with Spain.
Drive through the fishing village of A Guarda to follow the road along scenic coastal paths, forest roads and tarmac roads. Stop to admire the 12th-century monastery that dominates the small but attractive village of Oia.
Hotel (example): Hotel Raina
The journey continues along the coast past small fields, a few houses and villages before crossing a small mountain and reaching the beautiful holiday town of Baiona. As you leave Baiona, the landscape becomes more rural with a few villages and the occasional woodland. After a short ride on a busy road, you'll cycle through another series of villages as the city of Vigo appears in front of you. Ride through Castrelos Park to avoid the city centre.
Hotel (example): Hotel Tres Luces
Ride along the streets of Vigo to the north-east and leave the urban area behind you. Follow the Ria de Vigo estuary for views of floating mussel farms, the Cíes Islands and Vigo city and harbour as you cycle between villages and through a forest. A steep descent takes you to the town of Redondela, where your Portuguese coastal camino merges with the central Portuguese camino.
Stop for juicy, fatty oysters in the riverside town of Arcade, then follow an old stone path uphill to the forest. You'll soon be in the centre of the atmospheric squares of Pontevedra, where you can admire the medieval architecture while sipping a beer or wine with some tapas.
Hotel (example): Hotel Avenida
The journey to Padron is relatively easy and you'll spend the day surrounded by beautiful countryside. Bathe your feet in the hot spring in the centre of Caldas de Reis before gradually ascending through a series of villages and a lovely stretch of forest. Take time to explore medieval Padrón and discover its deep connection to St James and its tasty green peppers.
Hotel (example): Pazo de Lestrove
The final stage of your Camino takes you through a series of Galician villages with traditional houses and barns and the impressive sanctuary of Nossa Señora da Escravitute. Enjoy the forest path and then head up to Milladoiro, where you'll get your first glimpse of Santiago and the towers of the cathedral. Down in the valley, cross the Sar River and a final climb will take you into the city centre and through the medieval streets to the cathedral, where you'll end your journey.
Hotel (example): Hotel Gelmírez
Your journey is now over. This morning, you'll leave your hotel in Santiago and head home or further afield.
Extra nights in Santiago can be added when you book your tour.
It is possible to book a transfer back to Porto after the tour if you are not flying home from Santiago.
