The route

The route follows the numbered road junction network in the Netherlands and Belgium. It is mostly flat, with a few small climbs on the last part. You will cycle on dedicated cycle paths and side roads with little traffic. Only when travelling in and out of the cities can you expect increased traffic. The route is very well signposted and is also suitable for families and beginners.

Itinerary

See the day-by-day itinerary below.

Cycling is part of the urban culture in the Dutch capital. Numerous cycle paths dominate the cityscape and are an ideal way to explore the city. You can also discover the capital on a boat trip through the vast canal system.

For art lovers, a visit to the Van Gogh Museum is also worthwhile. Whatever your plans and preferences, you won't be bored in Amsterdam. The best way to round off the evening is with a glass of beer in one of the many restaurants.

On your first stage, you'll pass through the original Dutch nature in the green heart of the Netherlands. Extensive natural landscapes with plenty of water characterise this region. In between, you'll pass picturesque villages and small charming towns.

You'll also see one or two typical Dutch windmills along the way. Today's stage destination is the medieval city of Gouda. You will not only taste the world-famous cheese, but also the Gouda syrup waffles.

Hotel (example): Best Western Plus City Hotel

The highlight of the day is the windmills in Kinderdijk, built as early as 1740 and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997. Here you can learn how the Dutch have mastered the water for centuries. The 19 impressive buildings are among the most photographed sites in the country.

The region also has much more to offer in terms of nature: locks and dikes, idyllic waterways and historic drawbridges; the picturesque region north of Dordrecht will inspire you.

Today's stage first takes you to Dordrecht, the oldest city in the Netherlands. The historic centre, picturesque alleys and many monuments bear witness to a rich past. A short walk around the city will allow you to soak up the unique atmosphere.

Further on, you'll pass through De Biesbosch National Park. It's a freshwater delta of around 8,000 hectares with a branching labyrinth of streams and small rivers. You'll cycle through the Brabant region to reach your destination today, Bergen op Zoom. The city's history began 800 years ago, as numerous old squares tell us.

Hotel (example): Grand Hotel de Draak

Soon you will arrive at the Zoom-Kalmthoutse Heide National Park. The cross-border nature reserve offers beautiful pastures, forests and heaths and is ideal for cycling. Birdwatchers will discover many Dutch woodpecker species. Once in Belgium, you'll quickly roll into the harbour metropolis of Antwerp. Chocolate, beer and the famous Belgian fries await you here.

Hotel (example): Radisson Hotel Antwerp Berchem

As you cycle onwards, you'll first come to the historic city of Mechelen. Located on the banks of the Dijle River, its many churches and magnificent baroque facades are sure to impress you. The city is an excellent place to stop for lunch.

Following the course of the Dijle River, you'll finally reach the old university town of Leuven. The many cafés and restaurants will keep you cosy and the rich cultural offerings will keep you entertained.

Hotel (example): Park Inn Hotel by Radisson

Extensive forest landscapes accompany you on your final stage to the Belgian capital. From time to time there are small hills to contend with. Brussels has a lot to offer, including the Manneken Pis statue, the central Grote Markt square in the heart of the old town and the unique steel structure Atomium. You'll also get your money's worth in terms of culinary delights. In the hustle and bustle of the city, you can end the evening with a good glass of beer.

Hotel (example): Courtyard by Marriott Hotel Brussels Evere

After breakfast, your cycling tour through the Netherlands and Belgium comes to an end. Brussels is a very lively city where there is always something going on. The cultural and gastronomic offerings are extensive and it's worth extending your stay.
