The route

This is mainly an easy bike ride, with some gentle climbs and descents. The majority of the tour takes place on flat, tarmac roads. As you are travelling outside the high season, most roads are almost traffic-free. The tour is suitable for children over 14 years old.

Itinerary

See the day-by-day itinerary below.

You'll arrive at your hotel in the charming town of Alberobello, located in the centre of the Bari province. The town is known for its unique Trulli houses - small, white stone buildings with cone-shaped roofs. It's like stepping into a wonderland where history comes to life. Since 1996, the Trulli have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are a must-see in this region.

Today you'll enjoy a beautiful bike ride through the Valle d'Itria, a landscape full of charm and history. Along the way, visit Locorotondo and taste the area's famous wines before continuing to Ostuni - the ‘white city’ that sits proudly on a hilltop with breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea.

From Ostuni you'll travel through rolling landscapes of olive groves, vineyards and orchards. Today's destination is the historic town of Avetrana, located on the ancient Appian Way. Imagine following in the footsteps of Roman legionaries as you cycle along the remains of this ancient road.

Today the route heads towards the sea. After a short stop at Torre Colimena, continue along the coastal road with its many defence towers to Porto Cesareo. From here you continue along the Ionian coast to Gallipoli. This Greek ‘Kale Polis’ (beautiful city) welcomes you! The old town sits on an almost impregnable rocky island that stretches far out into the sea. The views to both north and south are stunning. The city has many churches and interesting museums.

The journey continues towards the southern tip of Salento, where the Adriatic Sea meets the Ionian Sea. Santa Maria di Leuca is known for its pilgrimage church, Basilica Santuario di Santa Maria de Finibus Terrae, which means ‘Sanctuary of the Virgin Mary at the End of the World’. The church is an important pilgrimage site and sits majestically overlooking the sea.

At the turn of the century, many magnificent villas were built that bear witness to a bygone era of elegance and exotic beauty. Here you can feel the tranquillity of a true Mediterranean paradise.

Along the dramatic coastline of the Adriatic Sea you'll reach the Messapian city of Otranto, which is considered an art-historical gem in the middle of a charming landscape. The old town is surrounded by a mighty city wall and impresses with the magnificent Habsburg castle. En route to Otranto, you'll have the opportunity to visit the famous Zinzulusa cave, the only coastal cave open to the public. Santa Cesarea Terme, known for its hydrotherapeutic treatments and radioactive mud therapies, also deserves a stop.

First along the Adriatic coast and then through countless olive groves towards Lecce. If you want a break along the way, a stop in the bay at Torre dell'Orso, surrounded by high limestone cliffs, is recommended. Lecce, the capital of Salento, is a city of great charm and outstanding beauty. Its buildings and churches are a testament to Baroque splendour.

Along with Naples, Lecce is known as the Baroque metropolis of the South, and the term ‘Lecce Baroque’ is rightly used. Around 30 churches and countless palaces await your visit. Don't forget to visit the amphitheatre and the Roman theatre, which was probably built by Emperor Augustus.

The trip is now over and it's time to head home or out into the world.
