This delightful cycling holiday takes you through three stunning European regions - Alsace, Baden and Palatinate - and the climate is mild and pleasant throughout. It's both the climate and history that have given these three regions a common interest - viticulture!

When it comes to food, you'll find plenty of choice here. During this tour, the charming landscapes change and you can also expect plenty of cultural highlights. You'll have the opportunity to learn how the Romans brought viticulture to this area, as well as experience the imperial buildings and monuments that recall the history of the cities of Strasbourg, Speyer and Worms.

This tour offers a lovely cycling route and great atmosphere along the Rhine.

You'll mainly cycle on well-maintained cycle paths along the Rhine cycle path. It is mainly a flat route that is easy to cycle for everyone. There are longer sections on gravel paths through the Rhine floodplains.

Welcome to the charming Alsatian capital of northern France, Strasbourg!

Depending on when you arrive, give yourself some time to explore the city's picturesque canals and unique atmosphere.

The first stage of the tour is a scenic journey along a well-established cycle path that takes you to the banks of the Rhine. Crossing the border from France into Germany, you'll cycle through the tranquil Rhine Valley and take the small ferry in Drusenheim to cross the Rhine. Continue through charming meadows until you reach Rastatt with its baroque old town.

Today's route takes you idyllically along the old Rhine arms (tributaries, creeks and streams branching off from the main river). Pass through seemingly untouched nature in the Hördter Rheinauen, the largest nature conservation area in the Palatinate, before reaching the former fortress town of Germersheim.

Here you can enjoy the Rhine riverside and the relaxed atmosphere of Germersheim where you spend the night.

You'll follow the Rhine to the historic city of Speyer, also located on the banks of the Rhine and home to an impressive UNESCO World Heritage cathedral. Highlights also include the palace and palace gardens of Schwetzingen before finishing the day's cycling stage in the university town of Heidelberg.

Today's stage takes you along the Neckar River to the ancient Roman city of Ladenburg with its beautiful medieval centre. Continue through the Rhine Valley to the city of Worms, with its 12th-century cathedral, Martin Luther monument and the oldest Jewish cemetery in Europe.

Enjoy today's pleasant cycle ride along the Rhine as you pass through agricultural landscapes and several tributaries of the Rhine. Cross the Rhine and soon you'll come across the first vineyards.

The destination for today's stage is the charming wine town of Nierstein.

Here we recommend enjoying a glass of local wine in the evening.

This stage is short and gives you plenty of time to explore. You'll cycle through vineyards with panoramic views of the Rhine Valley. The cycle path follows the banks of the Rhine and takes you into the heart of Mainz, where attractions such as the imperial cathedral await.

The price is based upon two people sharing. It is also possible travel alone in a single room. Simply choose "1 person" in the booking form and it will automatically add the single room surcharge.

On this tour you will be on your own supplied with maps, route descriptions and luggage transfers. That means that your time is your own and you have plenty of time to enjoy the stages in your own pace.

The process of your booking
When you book, we will start booking hotels and arranging all the practical details of the trip. This process typically takes 2-5 working days, but some bookings may take longer. If you are arranging your own transport, we recommend that you wait until we have confirmed your booking before arranging this.

Dates
If you can select the date in the tour calendar at the top of this page, this is a possible start date. We continually update the tours with sold-out dates, after which those dates will turn red and cannot be selected.

On all our cycling holidays it is possible bring your own bike but it also possible to rent a bike for the tour. The bikes you can rent are all perfectly suited for the tour and the local terrain and all bikes are perfectly maintained. If you want to rent a bike on your holiday, then you select this on the booking form.

Equipment included in the bike rental:

  • Saddle bag (water repellent)
  • Handlebar bag (water repellent)
  • Service-set with tools and extra bicycle tube
  • Combination lock

Please note that helmets are not included and you need to bring your own.

Roadside assistance
All bikes are equipped with puncture resistant tyres which means that it is virtually impossible to puncture. No rule without exceptions, so should you experience a punctured tyre then you can quickly fix it by using the tools in the service-set. If the damage is greater than a simply puncture then you simply call us and we make sure that your bike is fixed or you will be supplied with a new bike as quickly as possible.

Insurance is included
Insurance against theft and damages are included in the bike rental. Should you have any problems of this nature then all you have to do is to let us know and we will supply a new bike as quickly as possible. Naturally, careless or mischievous behavior is exempt from this.  

The flight to Strasbourg (France) or Frankfurt (Germany) is not included in the price of the trip. We recommend that you find your own flight on e.g. momondo

From Mainz to Frankfurt airport
There is a train from Mainz to Frankfurt Airport - this takes around 30 minutes.

On this tour there are two categories for the standard of accommodation.
The price includes accommodation in category B hotels and inns of 3-star quality, examples of the hotels are shown in the daily program.
It is possible to upgrade to category A, where 3-4 star hotels are used. The price is shown on the booking form.

On the booking form it is possible to choose extra nights before or after the tour.

Breakfast is included every day. It's easy to find lunch and dinner in the cities on the tour.

Luggage transfer is included on this tour. Upon arrival at the first hotel you will be given luggage tags along with the rest of the welcome package. You fill out the luggage tags and put them on your bags where they will remain for the duration of the tour.

One month before departure
You will receive a hotel list and final travel documents.

Upon arrival at the first hotel
You'll receive the welcome pack, which contains everything you need for the trip. There will be route descriptions, maps, luggage tags, specific local vouchers and if you have rented a bike, they will also be handed out at the first hotel. The documents are in English.

This tour has difficulty grade 2.

Grade 2
For cyclists who like hilly terrain and a bit longer distances. You cycle on good roads, which usually don’t have much traffic. The distance is between 35 – 60 km or 20 – 38 miles. If you are capable of riding a bike and you have a normal good health, you should not worry about going on these tours.
