Cycling holiday in Provence - Lubéron - 7 days

- Natural splendour and village idyll -

7 Days / 6 Nights
Moderate

Both natural and cultural landscapes have been preserved and you'll cycle through a strikingly beautiful area with charming and traditional villages.

Ménerbes, Lacoste (with the ruins of the Marquis de Sade's castle), Gordes and Roussillon, tastefully and skilfully placed between lavender and vineyards, apple and cherry orchards. It's hard to get more ‘Provençal’ than that! Already in April, the air is filled with the scent of flowers and spices and the landscape is extremely varied. Vast plains of fruit and vineyards, rocky mountain plateaus covered in lavender and impressive canyons of ochre-coloured limestone. The hustle and bustle of the modern world has not yet reached the Lubéron.

Itinerary

See the day-by-day itinerary below.

Arrival in Avignon, check-in at the hotel. Pick-up of bikes, maps, tour description, GPS and other materials.

Category A - Hotel (example): Hotel de l'Horloge****
Category B - Hotel (example): Hotel le Magnan***

You leave the papal city of Avignon on 2000-year-old roads that the Romans called ‘ViaRhona’, the road along the Rhône. You cycle along cosy back roads all the way to the medieval riverside town of Beaucaire, a town shrouded in legends and tales of castles, dragons and beautiful princesses.

Just across the river is Tarascon, no less fabled, suspiciously guarding both boat traffic on the river and those passing on the bridge over the river. Continue to Saint Remy de Provence, a relaxed and friendly artists' town whose colourful sunflower fields and distinctive cypress trees have inspired many famous painters, not least Vincent van Gogh.

Category A - Hotel (example): Hotel le Gounod***
Category B - Hotel (example): Hotel le Castelet des Alpilles***

From Saint-Remy you cycle through the small mountain range, the Alpilles, where Alphonse Daudet's poetry was born. Limestone cliffs and lush cypress groves characterise this beautiful landscape. At the top of the cliff lies les Baux de Provence, now a sleepy village but once a separate principality that produced bauxite for the nascent industrial revolution in Europe.

On the way down to the hotel, you'll have to slow down to see all the sights on the way to Cavaillon, which is famous for fruit farming, including wonderfully flavoursome melons and the production of traditional homemade jams.

Category A - Hotel (example): Mercure****
Category B - Hotel (example): Hotel du Parc***

The tour passes through all the most famous village gems of the Luberon Cultural Park: Mènerbes, Lacoste, Bonnieux to name but a few. There are many temptations and many small shops offering local products of all kinds.

In the afternoon, you'll arrive at your hotel in Roussillon, also classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France. Here you'll be captivated by the beautiful ochre colours that characterise the houses and landscape, ranging from pale yellow to glowing red.

There are two possible routes for this day.

Category A + B - Hotel (example): La Maison des Ocres***

Today the journey continues through the beautiful and always exciting Luberon. You'll pass the marvellous village of Gordes - carved in stone - and the beautiful Abbaye de Senanque, surrounded by lavender fields.

The Fontaine de Vaucluse, where Dante and Frederic Mistral wrote their famous writings, is also interesting and here you can walk up to the mysterious spring that supplies the river Sorgue with crystal-clear, ice-cold water from its depths.

There are two possible routes for this day.

Category A - Hotel (example): Grand Hotel Henri****
Category B - Hotel (example): Hotel du Parc***

On this final stage you'll cycle across the plains where fruit and vegetables are grown and maybe you can buy some provisions for today's picnic? We recommend a stop at the banks of the Sorgue River to enjoy the peace and quiet on the final stage of the tour.

There are two possible routes today.
