Provence - Cycling holiday along the wine route - Les Côtes du Ventoux

7 Days / 6 Nights
Easy

This tour follows the beautiful ‘route de vin’, the wine route, from the hillsides of the mighty Mont Ventoux to the plains of Tavel and Châteauneuf du Pape.

Here the vineyards lie like green carpets over the land, and in the midst of the greenery you pass many charming villages. Each village has ‘its’ wine and there are plenty of opportunities to get acquainted with the many excellent Côtes du Rhône and Côtes du Ventoux wines.

Perhaps the best known of these are the reds from Châteauneuf du Pape, Gigondas and Vacqueyras. Wineries and cooperatives are close by, so everyone can find their own favourite wine! The terrain is perfect for cycling, the area is beautiful and varied, you'll stay in smaller hotels and anyone who loves cycling in Provence can make room for another unforgettable Provence memory in their heart.

Today's stage is short and you'll have plenty of time to stroll around the lively old city centre with the Papal Palace, theatres, museums and galleries before the tour begins. Head east through cosy villages and agricultural areas along the Sorgue River. Feel free to bring food for lunch on the riverbank.

I'll sur la Sorgue is worth a coffee break - whether you spend the night here or in Fontaine de Vaucluse. It's about nine kilometres between the two towns, so the final stretch is quick. I'Ile sur la Sorgue (nicknamed Provence-Venezia) is a charming town on the Sorgue River, known for its markets and antiques.

Category B - Hotel (example): Hotel Du Parc
Category A - Hotel (example): Domaine De La Petite Isle

It doesn't get much more beautiful and ‘Provençal’ than this! Today's loop takes you into the Lubéron region, perhaps best known for its lavender fields in brilliant shades of purple. From the charming village of Gordes, you'll have fantastic views of the whole area.

Stop at Sénanque Abbey (+12 km) to enjoy the view of the lavender fields and spend some extra time at the Fontaine de Vaucluse, a geological curiosity. Overnight at the same hotel.

Today's cycling tour takes you into the wine regions at the foot of the impressive Dentelles de Montmirail limestone massif. Visit the wine villages of Vacqueyras, Gigondas and Beaumes de Venice, where the spicy Muscat grape is used to make a delicious sweet dessert or aperitif wine. There will be plenty of opportunities for wine tasting! Overnight stay in Vacquyras or Gigondas (depending on hotel availability).

Fontaine de Vaucluse - Vacqueyras: 51 km via vineyards (or 44 km via cycle route) or Isle sur la Sorgue - Gigondas: 50 km via vineyards (or 45 km via cycle route)

On quiet country lanes you cycle through vineyards and mountain landscapes through Dentelles and pass Séguret, listed as one of France's most beautiful villages. You'll cross the Côtes du Rhône vineyards and their picturesque villages: Cairanne and Rasteau. In Orange, admire the Roman monuments, the ancient theatre or the Arc de Triomphe and enjoy the charm of the old town with its shops and cafés.

As an additional option, you can visit Vaison-la-Romaine (+11 km), a charming town with 2000 years of history in the open air, a mix of Roman grandeur and medieval charm.

Category B - Hotel (example): Hotel Le Glacier
Category A - Hotel (example): Le Grand Hotel D'Orange Provence

On your way south towards Avignon, you'll pass one of the world's most prestigious wine regions, Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
