Cycling holiday in Provence and Camargue

- From the papal city of Avignon to the lagoons of Carmargues -

8 Days / 7 Nights
Moderate

The landscape varies from flat moorland by the sea to lush vineyards, forests and some mountainous areas. Through the vineyards of the Gard area, the road leads you directly to the majestic Pont du Gard, a Roman aqueduct over the river Gardon. The Camargue is characterised by plains with grazing horses, salt extraction, wetlands and lagoons with long-legged flamingos. In the mountainous Alpilles, the most beautiful villages are almost hidden in the landscape, and tall cypresses and silvery olive trees are reminiscent of ancient Greece. In Avignon, the seat of the Pope for 200 years, you can wander the medieval streets and perhaps catch the annual cultural festival in July.

More about the route

On this moderately easy round trip down to the Mediterranean Sea, you'll experience many aspects of Provençal culture and daily life as you cycle in peace and quiet on small roads with little traffic through beautiful villages and open countryside.

Itinerary

Here you can see the programme for the tour.

Arrive early to allow time to visit Avignon, especially the famous Palais des Papes! With its impressive ramparts and cobbled streets, Avignon instantly takes you back in time. Theatres, museums and art galleries sit alongside trendy bars and modern restaurants, giving Avignon a unique blend of the ancient and the modern.

Check-in at the hotel. Handover of bikes, tour description, GPS and materials.

Hotel (example): Hotel Le Magnan***

Today you'll drive via the small town of Crau through the lush wine country to Saint-Remy de Provence. Take a coffee break (or lunch) in this quaint town, perhaps at van Gogh's favourite café, ‘Café de Nuit’! Then continue through the impressive Baux de Provence on the rocky peaks of the Alpilles to Arles, the city with many memories from Roman times, including its famous arenas.

Hotel (example): Hotel de l'Amphitheatre***

The tour continues southwards through the protected natural landscape of the Camargue plain. The area is characterised by wetlands, salt extraction and birds of all kinds. There is also large-scale cattle and horse breeding of the characteristic white horses typical of the area. The people here have a history from Spain and the Orient, which is reflected in the special folklore and exotic costumes.

Hotel (example): Hotel Casa Marina***

This day offers a slightly faster stage that allows for a walk on the beach or to the small chapel, Notre Dame de la Mer, with stunning views of the sea. It is said that Mary Magdalene fled by boat after Jesus' death on the cross and was stranded in this very town. People flock from all over the world to see her tomb. From Saintes-Maries de la Mer you can drive north-west to Saint-Gilles with its famous Romanesque church and well-preserved crypt.

Hotel (example): Hotel Le Cours***

Today you leave the Camargue and turn your back on the Mediterranean. You'll cycle north with the mountain giant Mont Ventoux at the centre. On your way north, stop to admire the huge Roman aqueduct Pont du Gard (UNESCO), which stands as an impressive testament to Roman construction and engineering. Continue to your hotel.

Hotel (example): Hotel les Glycines**

Today you'll leave your hotel in Remoulins (or Saint Hilaire) and head to the village of Uzès, known as one of the most beautiful villages in Provence. On the way back to the hotel, you'll cycle partly along the Gardon River where you can enjoy a swim in the clean and cool river water.

This final day of cycling takes you through small roads and vineyards to Tavel, famous for its delicious rosé wine. Stop for a wine tasting or lunch in this peaceful, flower-filled town before embarking on the final leg of your journey back to Avignon.
