Cycling in Normandy - 6 days

6 Days / 5 Nights
Moderate

Pastel-coloured skies, sea and beach, white cliffs, lush inland apple orchards, grazing cows and horses, canals, beautiful half-timbered farmhouses with thatched roofs: Normandy is that idyllic.

There are Calvados distilleries, Gothic cathedrals, picturesque towns and villages and numerous war memorials. If you're interested in history and culture, from the Viking Age to the Second World War and the Normandy landings, this is where you should cycle next.

A Viking raid from the north led to the founding of the Duchy of Normandy in 911. The saga tells us that it was Gange-Rolv, son of Håkon Mørejarl, who was outlawed by the king and travelled south with his men on a raid. There are still many traces of the Vikings here, both in the name Normandy and in the many small towns with names ending in ‘vik’, ‘harbour’ and ‘bec’.

The route

These days you'll cycle through Normandy's rich history and inviting landscape from Bayeux via Cabourg and Honfleur to Trouville. Before you start cycling on the first day, it's a good idea to visit the museum where you can see Queen Mathilde's famous Bayeux Tapestry, which describes the Battle of Hastings and Duke William of Normandy's conquest of England in 1066 in embroidered ‘cartoon’ style.

Itinerary

See the day-by-day itinerary below.

Arrive in Bayeux after just over two hours by train from Paris. Perhaps you'll have time to visit the museum with the famous 11th century Bayeux Tapestry and the beautiful Notre Dame Cathedral before having dinner on your own? Accommodation in a centrally located hotel (A) and chambre d'hôte (B).

You can also spend an extra day in Bayeux!

The extra day includes a bike tour to Omaha Beach, where the Allies landed in Normandy on D-Day, 6 June 1944. If you wish, you can continue along the beaches to the American War Cemetery and possibly on to the famous Pointe du Hoc, where the German defences were stormed by the Americans. Return to the hotel in Bayeux, dinner on your own and overnight. 53 or 67 kilometres.

This must be selected on the booking form.

There will be sea, war history and beautiful nature this day. You'll pass Gold Beach and Arromanches with the landing museum ‘Musée du débarquement’ and see the many floating docks still in the sea where Churchill had them placed in 1944.

A circular cinema shows the Battle of Normandy in 360 degrees for those interested. The tour continues to Courseulles and the cosy hotel. Take a walk in the fishing harbour before dinner.

Category B - Hotel (example): Hotel De Paris**

The tour continues on cycle paths along the coast, passing Juno Beach and Sword Beach, small fishing villages and oyster harbours. Pegasus Bridge stands as a monument to one of the Allies' most important victories in 1944. The museum is open to visitors.

Continue along the beautiful Côte Fleurie coastline to the flower-filled seaside resort of Cabourg. Dinner on your own and overnight in a cosy hotel.

Take your time this day and have your camera ready. Enjoy nature, the cultural landscape, the sight of peacefully grazing cows and horses, the artfully and imaginatively designed old mansions and farmhouses. Along the way you'll pass many cosy towns/villages, including the picturesque Beaumont-en-Auge, and back on the coast you'll pass stately Deauville.

No less charming is Honfleur with its old harbour and its row of tall houses along the quay, which is a World Heritage Site. Dinner and overnight stay in a lovely and cosy hotel in a central location.

Category B - Hotel (example): Hotel Du Dauphin**

Another trip in the idyllic Norman hinterland, so green and lush, with apple trees and dairy cows; who hasn't heard of Calvados brandy and cheeses from Normandy. The houses here are still built according to the old-fashioned straw house method. Stop in the cosy and colourful Pont l'Evêque before heading back to the coast through the fashionable seaside resort of Deauville and on to its sister city Trouville. Dinner on your own and overnight stay.
