The route
On the way to the sea you'll get to know some of the most famous, namely Quéribus and Peyrepertuse. The landscape is never boring; mountains, hills, plains, streams and rivers merge into a beautiful cultural landscape. Nature gradually changes character and ‘settles down’ with vineyards, olive groves and lush Mediterranean vegetation on the way to the journey's destination, which is definitely worth all the cycling through this challenging landscape: the Mediterranean gem of Collioure.
Itinerary
Arrive in Carcassonne (by train from Toulouse or Béziers). Reception and briefing in English by our charming local representative. In case of late arrival, reception the next morning. Dinner on your own. Accommodation in a hotel just outside the city centre.
Hotel (example): Hotel Montmorency
You leave Carcassonne and cycle south to the village of Limoux, famous for its sweet and slightly sparkling white wine ‘Blanquette’. Today's destination is the village of Couiza. You're welcome to stop at the village castle before enjoying a delicious dinner at a cosy hotel in town.
Hotel (example): Chateau des Ducs de Joyeuse
This stage from the Pyrenees through the hilly landscape of the western Corbières takes you through beautiful vineyard landscapes in the Hautes Corbières (including the Pic de Bugarach peak), and you'll also get to know the ‘Citadelles du Vertige’ castle and the cataract castles of Quéribus and Peyrepertuse.
You'll be richly rewarded with magnificent views after your efforts on the tough climbs and breezy descents await you. In the charming little village of Cucugnan, you'll stay in a small Logis-de-France hotel.
Dinner is included. If you want to visit the cataract castles, we suggest an extra night in Cucugnan.
Hotel (example): Hotel Auberge du Vigneron
Today you leave the most hilly landscape of the Corbières and the landscape becomes softer and flatter towards the sea. Early in the day you'll cycle past the clifftop Château de Padern and eventually reach the village of Tautavel where you can visit the ‘Centre Européen de la Préhistoire’.
The cosy accommodation (with swimming pool) is located on the outskirts of the small town of Thuir.
Dinner on your own in the town.
Hotel (example): Casa9 Hotel
Take an extra trip past the village of Castelnou, listed as one of France's most beautiful (+11 km), before setting off on today's easy cycling stage. You'll leave the blues of the Corbières and the Pyrenees behind as you head towards the sea.
You might be tempted by a dip in the Mediterranean before reaching today's destination, Collioure. Here you'll stay in a cosy hotel with a back garden and swimming pool in the centre of town.
Dinner on your own.
Hotel (example): Hotel la Casa Pairal
You check out of the hotel during the morning and the tour is over.
