Cycling holiday in Champagne, 4 days

4 Days / 3 Nights
Easy

Champagne corks pop during a short but eventful bike ride in Champagne, a charming part of France east of Paris, which has given its name to the noble and sparkling elixir.

Only sparkling white wine from this region can use the term “champagne”. The starting point of the tour is the champagne capital of Epernay, where the champagne houses line the Avenue de Champagne. Several kilometers of underground passages and wine cellars have been dug out of the chalk mountain and house millions of champagne bottles. Although the focus is on champagne, Epernay offers sights such as the Church of Notre Dame, the St Martin portal, the Hôtel de Ville and other 19th-century architecture.

Highlights of the journey

  • Explore the champagne capital of Epernay, where the champagne houses along the Avenue de Champagne open the doors to underground passages and wine cellars hiding millions of champagne bottles.
  • Visit the beautiful wine town of Hautvillers, the birthplace of Dom Perignon and known as the “Cradle of Champagne”
  • Explore charming villages like Cumières and Damery.
  • Cycle along the Côte des Blancs vineyards south of Epernay. Discover villages like Pierry, Chavot, Avize and Cramant, where only Chardonnay grapes are grown.

The Route

“Je bois des étoiles“ (”I drink stars"), Dom Perignon said of champagne. Dom Perignon, who is credited with the creation of this exclusive drink, came from the beautiful wine town of Hautvillers, known as the “cradle of champagne”, which is a natural stop on your bike tour. Vast vineyards, fields and rivers in a rolling, tranquil landscape with sweeping views meet you along the way. You can visit rows of great champagne houses in the champagne capital of Epernay or local winemakers in the countryside, all while tasting the noble drops.

After breakfast, you'll set off on today's stage, which runs along the valley sides of the Marne Valley, where the Marne River winds its emerald green and sparkling way through the valley floor. After a long climb, you'll reach the village of Hautvillers, known as the “Cradle of Champagne”.

Here you can enjoy your first “coupe de champagne” of the day at a charming family-run winery (must be booked in advance) along with the magnificent views. Perhaps you'd like to take a look at the church and Dom-Perignon's tombstone?

The tour continues through a beautiful and varied landscape via charming Cumières and Damery before crossing the valley floor and passing through Boursault on the way back to Epernay.

Dinner at a good restaurant in the city center and overnight in the same place.

Today's tour starts after breakfast at the hotel and heads into the Côte des Blancs vineyards south of Epernay via villages such as Pierry, Chavot, Avize and Cramant. Only Chardonnay grapes are grown in this area, which connoisseurs say gives the champagne a light and delicate taste with finesse and elegance. Enjoy the magnificent view of the vineyards at the park with the giant bottle in Avize!

There's not a moment's hesitation, as both small and large champagne producers compete for attention and ingenuity abounds: from picturesque wrought iron signs to boxwoods shaped like champagne bottles.
