Cycling from Bordeaux to Toulouse

7 Days / 6 Nights
Easy

You will follow the Garonne canal, the extension of the Canal du Midi that connects Toulouse to the Mediteranean Sea. This section is called the “Canal des Deux Mers” (the canal of the two seas), connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediteranean Sea: a fantastic route between vineyards and medieval villages, along the Garonne. You will venture across beautiful towns and cultural sites like Moissac… and don’t forget the gastronomy, truly inescapable in this region!

This wonderful cycling holiday starts in Bordeaux and on the green line on 50km to Sauveterre de Guyenne and by country of Sauterne, 26km of small roads to Réole, you will follow the Garonne canal until Toulouse.

About the route

This is an easy cycling tour and the stages vary between 37 - 67km per day (2-5 hours cycling). The terrain is flat. Hybrid bikes are best suited for the terrain. Mountain bikes are an option but not necessary. From Bordeaux there are a few climbs and descents, but the route becomes flat as soon as you reach the canal. The surface is easy to cycle on.

Itinerary

Here you can see the programme for the tour.

You begin your journey at your arrival in Bordeaux and check-in at your hotel. You can test-ride your bikes today. We recommend either a visit to Bordeaux by bike or by foot. There are numerous restaurants in Bordeaux, simple restaurants or gastronomical.

Hotel (exampel): Hotel Des 4 saeurs

Venture out of Bordeaux on a cycle path. Between Dordogne and Gironde, by the city of Bastide de Créon, la Sauve Majeure (a former Benedictine abbey).
Cross the medieval village of Sauveterre de Guyenne, a beautiful historical town with four gates and its fortified town founded in 1281. It is also the county of the canton of Entre Deux Mers (AOC). The path is entirely on a cycle lane and on the green line named “Roger Lapébie” after the famous cyclist, winner of the Tour de France in 1937.

Hotel (exampel): Chez Mme Duranteau

Embark on this stage from St Martin de Lerm to la Réole by small roads. After that, you reach the cycle path of the Garonne canal that you will follow until Fouques sur Garonne or the Mas d’Agenais.

Hotel (eksempel): Au fil du canal

At the Mas d’Agenais, don’t miss the visit of the beautiful roman church. Continue along the green canal where you will have plenty of opportunities to stop and savor the views. You will pass by the quaint town of Damezan, founded in 1259. The rest of the day continues along the canal. You can expect a calm and gentle ride until the village of Sérignac.

Hotel (exampel): Le Prince Noir

As you continue along the Garonne Canal, you will pass by the superb bridge of Pont Canal d’Agen with a stop in the historical city centre of Agen. The day continues along the canal until Moissac, centre of roman art, on the Santiago de Compostella Way. The abbey and the cloister are part of the UNESCO world’s heritage. Moissac’s landscape is dominated with orchards and vineyards of the famous Chasselas. This is the place where the Tarna the Garonne meet.

Hotel (exampel): Chambres d'hotes Le Prevote

The Garonne and its canal will lead us into the heart of Toulouse (« la ville Rose », the pink city) at the end of 56 sluice of the Garonne canal.
If you have chosen the bike rental, you will leave your bicycles in Toulouse.

Hotel (exampel): Hotel Royal Wilson

Before travelling further, we recommend spending some time in Toulouse, which boasts two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Canal du Midi (shared with other cities) and the Basilica of Sernin, the largest surviving Romanesque building.
