Itinerary
Arrive in Bordeaux (by plane or train) and transfer by taxi to Pian Médoc, north of Bordeaux. This 3-star hotel with swimming pool has a famous restaurant, which is also the oldest in the district. Bikes and equipment are provided by the hotel staff.
Hotel (example): Hotel Le Pont Bernet
Today's stage follows the beautiful ‘Castle Route’, which heads north towards the world-famous Margaux Castle along the Garonne River. A little further north, the Garonne merges with the Dordogne River to become La Gironde, which forms Europe's largest estuary in the Atlantic Ocean. ‘The ‘Castle Route’ through the Médoc is aptly named as it's only a few pedal strokes to the next castle and one grand cru chateau follows another.
Pleasant and comfortable cycling in green surroundings leads you to the small harbour of Lamarque, where the afternoon ferry takes you across to Blaye with the impressive Vauban citadel, and in the middle of the castle is the hotel (with swimming pool) with panoramic views of the Gironde river, vineyards and countryside.
Hotel (example): Clos Reaud
In the morning, follow the Gironde River south via ‘La Route de la Corniche Fleurie’ - a small road that winds along the river and over a small ridge where palm trees, rose gardens and olive trees testify to the pleasant climate - to Bourg, one of the region's most beautiful and well-preserved cities.
Heading inland, you'll pass famous wine regions such as Fronsac (wine from here was a favourite at the court of Louis IV) and Pomerol, an area of modest size but with a world-class reputation - the ‘Petrus’ wine from here may not be within the budget of the average cyclist? ‘Cheval Blanc and Château Angélus are also on the route to the beautiful wine town of Saint-Emilion, which, with its unique monolithic church and underground passages, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999.
There are many restaurants to choose from in the town.
Hotel (example): Auberge de la Commanderie
Treat yourself to a lazy morning and enjoy the views of Saint-Emilion and the vineyards. We suggest adding a wine tasting (4-5 good Saint-Emilion and Pomerol wines) at 10.30am (not on Sundays) in the special castle with the Jacobin abbey in the centre of Saint-Emilion - a great experience (optional and extra cost).
Today's short stage heads eastwards from Saint-Emilion through beautiful hilly countryside with sweeping views of vineyards and small villages.
Along the way you'll pass castles such as Château Haut Sarpe, Château des Laudes, Château Laroque, Château Pavie and many more. If you choose the longer route, you'll cycle to the town of Castillon la Bataille, located on the Dordogne River, and then follow a pleasant stretch of road ‘homewards’ towards Saint-Emilion.
Hotel (example): Auberge de la Commanderie
Today you will head towards Bordeaux. You'll enjoy the last of the Saint-Emilion vineyards and reach Branne on the Dordogne River after approximately 9 kilometres.
From here, follow the ‘Roger Lapébie’ cycle path through varied terrain to the centre of Bordeaux. Enjoy a picnic lunch at one of the picnic areas and stop at the Sauve Majeure Abbey and Créon, a fortified village typical of the region.
Savour your first impressions of Bordeaux as you enter Place de la Bourse by the famous ‘water mirror’ on the river. Your centrally located hotel represents the old and stately Bordeaux with its typical 18th-century architectural style.
Hotel (example): Hotel de Normandie
Morgenmad på hotellet, hvor cyklerne afleveres. Hjemrejse.
Hvis I har valgt denne tur på grund af jeres interesse for vin, kan vi varmt anbefale et besøg på La Cité du Vin i Bordeaux - et oplevelsescenter for vinentusiaster.
