Cycling holiday in Alsace - 7 days

7 Days / 6 Nights
Moderate

Alsace has definitely been the best in class among all French regions when it comes to developing its own cycle path network. The tour is mainly on cycle paths or tarmac roads with minimal traffic, well maintained and tidy throughout, and the route is marked in the terrain.

During the tour you'll discover the charming and picturesque Alsace with its postcard towns with half-timbered houses and flower-decorated balcony boxes, as well as the region's lesser-known landscapes and treasures. Admire Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque architecture, art treasures in museums, old neighbourhoods with medieval buildings and much more. And there will be plenty of opportunities for wine tasting - much of the tour follows the famous wine route.

The route

Like pearls on a string, there are beautiful wine towns with names that testify to the fact that this district has historically been a toss-up between German and French rule: Riquewihr, Obernai, Barr, Kaysersberg, Ribeauvillé and others. The tour starts and ends in Strasbourg. In Colmar, the birthplace of the patron saint of Alsace, Saint Odile, visit the Unterlinden Museum and the old town. The homes with character and charm have been carefully selected.

The overall experience in Alsace is like a piece of music with pure harmonies.

Bikes will be collected in the morning from our partner at the railway station. Spend the morning strolling around Strasbourg on your own, before today's stage takes you along the canal connecting the Rhône and Rhine rivers into the heart of the Ried district with several cosy villages such as Osthouse, Saint-Hippolyte and Huttenheim.

Accommodation in beautiful Sélestat (or in a village earlier on the route*).

Category A + B - Hotel (example): Vaillant***

Today's ride takes you through the flat and bike-friendly landscape of the Ried district, characterised by the Rhine and L'Ille rivers as major waterways, numerous streams and airy forests. The stage winds through typical villages to Colmar, the wine and culture capital of Alsace. From here comes the sculptor Bartholdi, creator of the Statue of Liberty, and famous Renaissance painters such as Martin Schoengauer and Mathias Grüneweld. A visit to the Old Town and the Unterlinden Museum is a must!

Category B - Hotel (example): Beauséjour***

Spend some of the morning in the cultural city of Colmar before today's relatively short stage, which takes place on cycle paths next to the main road out of the city. You cross the Alsace plain from east to west.

At the foot of the Vosges Mountains, the wine route connects the beautiful wine towns like pearls on a string. They have all contributed to the world fame of Alsace wines with their quality wines: Eguisheim, Turkheim, Kaysersberg and Riquewihr.

Category A - Hotel (example): Hôtel KLE****
Category B - Hotel (example): La Tour***

Look forward to today's stage, which takes you through the heart of the wine region with typical wine villages such as Hunawihr, Ribeauvillé, Bergheim, Andlau with its abbey, Barr and Obernai. Accommodation in either Andlau or Obernai.

From Obernai, cycle via Rosheim with the church of St Pierre et Paul, a jewel of Romanesque architecture.
