Cycling holiday from Vienna to Budapest

8 Days / 7 Nights
Moderate

On this cycling holiday you can explore lowland forests, original villages and magical cities. The three metropolises of Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest are of course the most famous. In Carnuntum and in the Roman castle of Kelemantia you will find Roman remains from the past. Discover the diversity of flora and fauna in the lowland forests.

The small villages you cycle through still retain their original charm. You pass by Rye Island, a true natural paradise. Don't forget the many castles and palaces that sit proudly on the Danube. The small towns along the cycle path have a special character and their charming historic centres invite you to explore and enjoy. All in all, this cycle tour will inspire everyone!

The route

You cycle on cycle paths, along an embankment and partly on relatively quiet side roads. Busy roads are of short duration. You will only cycle three short stretches on gravel roads, otherwise you will find paved roads. On the whole, the route is very well signposted with a few exceptions in the Slovakian part. All in all, the ride is relatively easy with a few climbs on some stretches.

Itinerary

See the day-by-day itinerary below.

We recommend that you arrive well in advance. This metropolis on the Danube has a lot to offer and it's worth staying longer. Enjoy a cup of coffee and the typical Viennese cake ‘Sachertorte’ in one of the many coffee houses or treat yourself to a ride in the horse-drawn carriage ‘Fiaker’.

The first leg of your cycling tour takes you through the Donau-Auen National Park. Here you'll discover nature's diversity of flora and fauna and the many different landscape types. You'll pass Orth Castle and the village of Eckertsau before reaching Bad Deutsch-Altenburg. Here you can take an excursion on the Roman cycle path (Römerweg) to Carnuntum. The archaeological park is considered one of the most important archaeological sites in Austria. After Hainburg, you'll reach the border with Slovakia and its capital Bratislava, where you'll spend the night.

You'll cycle a short distance on Slovakian territory before crossing the Hungarian border in Rajká. Within the first few kilometres of cycling in Hungary, you'll discover charming villages. The entire stretch is characterised by agriculture. Your route will take you through the so-called Szigetköz (a small rugged island). This is characterised by countless tributaries of the Danube. Today's destination is Mosonmagyaróvár, also known as the ‘City of 17 Bridges’.

Today you'll also cycle through the natural paradise of the small Rye Island. Along the way you'll pass Hédervár, which is perfect for a lunch break. The castle is located in the centre of a protected park. You should plan plenty of time to visit Györ. The capital of the district offers many sights and a breathtaking historic centre.

Soon you'll arrive in Hungarian Böny. From here the route takes you to Bábolna, a well-cultivated town with a beautiful old town centre. The local national stud farm is known far beyond the borders of the country. Racehorses are bred in the splendid inner courtyard. The last part of the route takes you back to the Danube. You will then reach the divided town of Komárom/Komárno. In the evening you can relax in the local spa.

Category B - Hotel (example): Hotel Forrás Komárom

Today's route runs close to the river banks in the flat Danube valley. Along the way, you'll pass various villages and as you cycle, you can see the vineyards in the background. Sporty cyclists can choose a route over the Tata, but there are some climbs and a good basic fitness level is required. History buffs should plan time to visit the Roman castle of Kelemantia, which is on the way.

An absolute highlight today, however, is Esztergom (also known as ‘Hungarian Rome’): its basilica is the largest church in the country. Take time for an extensive visit before boarding a riverboat that will take you to your destination of Visegrád. You'll be impressed by the stunning views of the beautiful landscape of the so-called ‘Danube Bend’.

The Royal Palace and Visegrád Castle will delight you, and the open-air museum and baroque old town of Szentendre invite you to stay. The first part of today will again take you through the ‘Danube Bend’, which is probably the most attractive part of the Danube Cycle Path. Soon you'll arrive in Budapest, where you can review all the impressions of this wonderful cycling tour as you stroll through the city.
