Bering's cycling holiday in Salzkammergut

Enjoy the glistening lakes of the Salzkammergut

7 Days / 6 Nights
Moderate

You can almost hear the tones of ‘the hills are alive, with the sound of music’ as you cycle through the stunning Austrian countryside with its green fields and beautiful mountains that are beautifully reflected in the many lakes on a windless day. Salzkammergut is an area that invites you to cycle along the lakeshores while everyday life is put on hold for a while.

In addition to being the area known from the film The Sound of Music, Salzkammergut has plenty of nature and cultural experiences to offer. Salzburg is full of historic buildings and just a few kilometres outside the city, you'll experience unique panoramic landscapes.

The tour takes you past 10 beautiful lakes and through small exciting towns such as Oberndorf, Gmunden, Bad Ischl, Obertraun, St Wolfgang and St Gilgen.

Along the lakeshores and the Salzach River, the terrain is flat, but between the lake areas it's a more hilly landscape. The routes are partly on cycle paths near the towns, but outside the towns it's mostly on country lanes, cosy forest roads and gravel roads.

Highlights on the tour

  • Great cycling trails around the ‘10 lakes’ and the beautiful mountain landscape of Salzkammergut
  • Discover the charming towns of Salzburg, Oberndorf, Hallstatt, Bad Ischl and St. Gilgen
  • Hike up to Tiefbrunnau, where the bikes will be transported for you
  • Great boat trip on Lake Attersee (in the summer period 01.07 - 31.08)
  • Cycling routes in the idyllic landscape where the film The Sound of Music was shot

Itinerary

See the day-by-day itinerary below.

After check-in at the hotel in Salzburg, there will be an information meeting about the tour and bike distribution and customisation (the time of the meeting can be found in the practical information you will receive after booking).

Hotel (example): 3-star hotel

You'll start by cycling along the Salzach River before following the route of the former Ischlerbahn railway line to Eugendorf. The cycle path then leads through lush meadows to Thalgau and to the foot of the Drachenwand, an impressive rock formation that extends into Lake Mondsee. From here, the cycle path along the lake takes you either to the town of Mondsee or on to Attersee.

The route is either around 50km or 80km depending on whether you stay at Mondsee or Attersee. If you stay at Attersee, tomorrow's route is correspondingly shorter.

Hotel (example): 3-star hotel

Attersee, the largest lake in Salzkammergut, is not only known for its deep green colour, but also for the magnificent estates along its shores owned by celebrities from near and far. The route takes you along the lakeshore to Weyregg and then through the scenic Aurachtal valley to Traunsee. Along the way you'll pass charming towns such as Gmunden, known for its Orth Castle and ceramics factory, Altmünster with its bicycle museum and Traunkirchen, famous for its fisherman's pulpit, before reaching Ebensee.

Hotel (example): 3-star hotel

On the cycle path along the Traun River you'll soon reach the imperial town of Bad Ischl. Franz Josef and his Sissy are said to have always sat at the famous Café Zauner. Be sure to try the legendary Zaunerstollen and a cup of Melange there. Once you're refreshed, it's not far to Wolfgangsee. Possible accommodation options are Abersee or St Gilgen.

Hotel (example): 3-star hotel

There are several options for an active day at Austria's most famous lake. We recommend taking the mountain railway (fare not included) to the top of Schafberg (1782 m), which offers magnificent panoramic views. You can also enjoy a boat trip (fare not included) or take a short bike ride to the well-known lakeside villages.

Hotel (example): 3-star hotel

The cycle path along the lake takes you to St. Gilgen and continues to the deep blue Fuschlsee. From there you cycle to Tiefbrunnau, past Hintersee and through the Strub Gorge to Wiestal. The ride through the Glasenbach Gorge to the Salzach Valley is impressive. Just before you reach Salzburg, a detour to Hellbrunn Castle is highly recommended. Your destination is the festival and Mozart city of Salzburg with its many attractions.

Hotel (example): 3-star hotel

After breakfast, check out and return home. If you have rented bikes on the tour, they will be returned to your last hotel.

Notice: On some tours it is necessary to either print the documents yourself or to bring them electronically.

On your arrival day, there will be a briefing about the tour where you get handed the tour documents and the bikes. The meeting is usually between 17 and 19 and should there be exceptions to this,  you will be notified by the reception upon check-in.

Note that should you arrive too late to participate in the briefing all the materials will be left for you at the hotel. In our view the welcome briefing is not that important since the documentation is very easy to follow.

This journey has a difficulty level of 2-3, which means that most days on the tour are grade 2 and a few are grade 3.

Grade 2
For cyclists who like hilly terrain and a bit longer distances. You cycle on good roads, which usually don’t have much traffic. The distance is between 35 – 60 km or 20 – 38 miles. If you are capable of riding a bike and you have a normal good health, you should not worry to join these trips.

Grade 3
Longer distances in hilly terrain, often with steep climbs. The distance is usually 65 – 80 km or 40 – 50 miles per day. Requires good shape and health. We highly recommend that you practice on some longer rides before you leave home.

We recommend taking out travel insurance that covers at least illness, accident, repatriation, lost holiday, luggage and liability. As a customer, you are responsible for taking out the necessary travel insurance to cover these costs.
