Cycling holiday along the Danube for families

- Ride on the Grottenbahn, a Celtic village and Ferris wheel -

8 Days / 7 Nights
Easy

A wonderfully mild climate, a diverse landscape along the Danube and vineyards as far as the eye can see. Our family cycling holiday along the Danube from Linz to Vienna is a varied adventure for the whole family. There are so many experiences in store and the only challenge has been to fit it all into one holiday.

In the Celtic village you'll be transported back in time to 700 BC, on the famous Grottenbahn you'll be enchanted by fire-breathing dragons, witches and goblins and on the Ferris wheel you can see all of Vienna at your feet.

All of the cycling stages are wonderfully easy and especially suitable for families with children. If you need to cool off on hot summer days, you can stop at the many water parks, lakes or public outdoor pools along the route.

Highlights of the journey

  • Cycling along the beautiful Danube on a perfect cycle path
  • Lots of different adventures along the route, such as the Grottenbahn, the Celtic city, museums and water parks
  • The Wachau region with its beautiful landscape and delicious food
  • Vienna with the Ferris wheel, zoo and much more

The route

This tour is not demanding and is suitable for cyclists of all ages. We recommend that you have a basic level of fitness and that you can ride a bike, but other than that no special prerequisites are required. The terrain along the Danube is flat and almost the entire route is on cycle paths with no other traffic. There is only a very short section on a busy road.

Itinerary

See the day-by-day itinerary below.

Today, the capital of Upper Austria welcomes you. Take a leisurely stroll through the historic city centre, see the animals at the Linz Zoo or explore one of the city's museums, such as the Arts Electronica Center. There you can experiment, explore and test. If you've hired bikes for the tour, they'll be waiting at your hotel.

Hotel (example): Arcotel Nike

Fire-breathing dragons, goblins and witches are all still to be found in the Grottenbahn on Mount Pöstlingberg! We strongly recommend that you experience this before you embark on today's cycling tour. You'll cycle quietly out of the city along the Danube.

You'll pass cosy areas such as Lake Pleschinger See with playgrounds and a swimming area and as you continue, the houses get further and further apart and nature takes over. Lake Ausee is a great place to take a break, with a water park with water slides, climbing towers and slip & slide running areas - lots of fun for the kids. From there you'll continue onwards, veering slightly away from the Danube Valley to Enns.

Hotel (example): Hotel Zum Goldenen Schiff

Here in Austria's oldest city you can explore the Roman path that encircles the city, take a trip to the water park with its 65-metre water slide or walk through the castle area. After these experiences, continue on the cycle path along the banks of the Danube and discover the idyllic Machland area. On the way to Grein, you'll come across the next highlight, the Celtic Village at Mitterkirchen. Discover Austria's prehistory with a walk through the town.

Hotel (example): Hotel Aumühle

Grein has always been known as the ‘pearl of the Strudengau region’. It was the last safe harbour for ships before embarking on the dangerous part of the river. For this reason, ships were often unloaded here to avoid the risk of losing their cargo. This traffic is the reason Grein is the charming town it is today. In the town you'll find a climbing area and an outdoor swimming pool. From here, the Danube valley narrows and you can enjoy the fascinating sites of the Strudengau region all the way to today's destination in Marbach.

Hotel (example): Hotel Schachner Krone

Enjoy a delicious breakfast and relax in the Nibelungenbad pool in Marbach - A cycling holiday in Austria is simply amazing. From Maria Taferl, the view of the blue Danube is simply outstanding. Today you'll cycle just a few kilometres before reaching the Wachau region. As colourful as the Wachau region is, the local produce, such as apricots and apples, is just as varied. The Wachau region is world-famous for its delicious food and there's something for everyone in the family.

Hotel (example): Wachauerhof Melk

Melk is the gateway to the Wachau. We think it's a must to visit the famous Benedictine monastery in town. Today you can choose between cycling to Krems or take a day off from cycling and instead sail all the way to Krems. It's also possible to sail part of the way and cycle the final stretch from Spitz or Dürnstein. Whatever you choose, you can enjoy the varied landscape of vineyards and vast meadows.

Hotel (example): Zum goldenen Engel

This day starts with a train ride to Tulln, where you'll cover the first kilometres of today's stage. From here you'll embark on the final cycle ride of the journey to Vienna. It's a great feeling when you cycle the final kilometres across the Danube island and finally reach your destination in the capital of Austria. Vienna has plenty to offer: you can visit the Prater Park (think Tivoli) with everything from haunted houses to Ferris wheels, stroll along Mariahilfer Straße, take a break in one of the many cafés or visit the zoo. Vienna has countless offers for the whole family.

Hotel (example): Roomz****

The journey is now over and you will check out of your hotel during the morning. If you wish to stay extra nights at the last hotel of the tour, this is definitely an option.
