Packing for the flight and trekking
Keep weight to a minimum and makes room for shopping. Kathmandu is heaven for gear freaks! Dress code in Nepal is very relaxed, even in the 5-star hotels.
On arrival in Kathmandu you will get a large duffle bag to pack for your luggage on the trek. The duffle bag is very handy for the porters and the yaks to carry. Keep the weight down to 12-15 kg or 25-33 lbs. on the trek. There is a maximum of 15 kg / 33 lbs. on the luggage weight for the domestic flight to Lukla. It is convenient to leave some clean clothes in Kathmandu to when you return after the trek.
Equipment
Below is an equipment list for the trek to Everest Base Camp. The gear list is indicative and is prepared on the basis of years of experience of trekking in Nepal. Generally, it is all about having the "right" equipment and keeping the weight down.
Consider the following when you pack
- During the trekking seasons in spring and autumn Kathmandu have about 28-30 degrees during the day, and a bit chilly at night.
- In the mountains temperatures varies at lot during the days. At high altitude it is cold in the morning, but it could easily rise to 20 °C at midday. When the sun sets, the temperature drops dramatically and it may well be minus 10-12 °C during nighttime. Clothes for warm weather is just as important as for cold weather.
- We highly recommend dressing up layer-by-layer. Woollen underwear or similar fabrics is essential. Fleece or a wool sweater is perfect as the warm layer under the windproof shell jacket. A down jacket is super nice, but not strictly necessary.
- Many trekkers experience that it is colder than they had imagined, so make sure you bring enough warm clothes!
- On arrival in Kathmandu you will get a large duffle bag in good quality to pack for the trek. It is convenient to pack your clothes in various plastic bags, so it is extra waterproof and easier to maintain order.

Hiking boots
It is important that you bring good footwear for the trek to Everest Base Camp. Hiking boots with a solid and profiled sole is a "must". If you buy new boots, make sure you buy them in a real equipment store, where you can get good advice. Make sure you have done some good hikes in the boots, before setting off on your journey so you feel comfortable. We recommend having two pairs of socks in boots: A pair of thin inner socks (preferably cotton) and a pair of thick woollen socks outside. In this way you can avoid many blisters.
Sleeping bag
Although you in teahouses, it is very important to bring good warm sleeping bag as the bedrooms are not heated. Sleeping well at night is essential for getting a good experience out of the trek, so it is important not to freeze. It is convenient to use a fleece inner bag inside the sleeping bag when it's really cold. It is a cheap and convenient way to improve your sleeping bag.
