Hiking along the Salt Trails from Lake Chiemsee to Lake Koenigssee

- On ancient Salt Paths from Lake Chiemsee to Lake Königssee -

8 Days / 7 Nights
Challenging

The new extensive hiking path ‚Salzalpensteig’ takes you along old former paths, on which salt was transported, commencing from the pretty banks of Lake Chiemsee, the ‚Bavarian Sea’, all the way to Lake Königssee, the ‚Bavarian Fjord’. Walk along idyllic forest and rural tracks through a quaint but also charming landscape with small villages, characteristic farm houses and cow pastures. Not only popular holiday destinations such as Bergen, known for the cable car on the panorama mountain Hochfelln, the famous biathlon village of Ruhpolding and the historic salt/saline village Bad Reichenhall await on your hiking week, but also unique high-altitude hikes with magnificent views onto the ‚Wilder Kaiser’ mountain, the Chiemgauer Alps and last but not least the ‚Steinerne Meer’-mountain range with the two summits Watzmann and Hochkönig. In the course of your tour you come across plenty of huts and alps for a well-earned break and to sample some of the regional delicacies. During your hiking week through the ‚Bavarian Salt-Alps’, you will also learn many things worth knowing about the four Bavarian brine pipelines, about culture, history and traditions of the Salt Alps population.

Hiking with a dog
On this particular walking tour you have the option of bringing your ‚four-legged friend’. When booking, simply let us know the breed and the size of your dog. Possible additional costs are payable locally on site.

About the route

A week rich in variety with hiking tours along the old salt paths with a duration each of up to 6 hours. On some days surefootedness and a head for hights are required. You walk across picturesque mountain scenery with views onto steep, jaggered peaks, two marvellous lakes, gushing mountain streams and gorges.

Itinerary

Here you can see the programme for the week.

You arrive to your first hotel on the journey in the mountains. After you have checked in to your hotel you can explore your surroundings.

Hotel (example): Bayerischer Hof

The tour starts with a comfortable walk along the incredibly picturesque lakeside of Lake Chiemsee, through tranquil nature reserves near the reed belt. You encounter a charming landscape with little forest paths and typical Bavarian farm houses dotted around on your route to Marquartstein.

Hotel (example): Gabriele

Today prepare for an idyllic alpine pasture tour. After the ascent to the Schnappenkirchlein, where you have the best views of Lake Chiemsee, there are numerous alps inviting you for a break. The route continues past grazing cattle with views to steep summit flanks, then through lush meadows and shady forests into the well-known holiday resort Bergen.

Hotel (eksample): Salzburger Hof

A breezy cable car ride will take you to Hochfelln, where you will visit the Taborkircherl and the impressive summit cross and enjoy a fantastic view of the Central Alps. About pastures and forest roads, it goes down into the mystical fairy tale forest. Soon after you reach Ruhpolding, the popular resort in the middle of the Chiemgau Alps.

Hotel (example): Hotel Alp inn

Along the river Ache to Lake Taubensee. The descent leads via alpine pastures and past steep rockfaces, before you walk on forest and rural trails all the way to the climatic health resort Inzell. The typical Bavarian flair and the views onto the surrounding summits are best enjoyed with a cool ‚Maß’(1 litre) of beer in your hand.

Hotel (example): Alpinhotel Inzeller

Walk along the path of the brine pipelines and through the idyllic Höllenbachalm, where you can taste fresh dairy products from the own grazing cattle. The Salt Path leads you above the cute little mountain lake Thumsee, along forest paths with a view onto Bad Reichenhall. Past the Old Saltworks you reach this beautiful salt health resort, where the Rupertus-Thermal spa invites your muscles to some relaxation time.

Hotel (example): Almrausch

Short train ride and then ascent to a glorious and remote forest area. High-altitude paths with incredible panoramic views lead you along the mountainside with the ‚Steinerne Meer’ mountain range and the two summits Watzmann and Hochkönig in front of you. Then a short section along the brine pipeline path, before you ascend through the forest to the Grünstein mountain. Glistening deep down below you is lake Königssee, green in colour, with boat houses and little boats, set amidst the national park Berchtesgaden and is the picturesque finish of your hiking holiday.

Hotel (example): Brandtnerhof

This tour is now over. During the morning you check out from the hotel. It is possible to book extra nights after the tour if you prefer.

- Experience tip -

Visit Kehlsteinhaus also known as The Eagle's Nest during your hiking holiday.
Your tour ends in Berchtesgaden National Park, either at a hotel in Schönau am Königsee, or Berchtesgaden. From Schönau to Berctesgaden it is only a 7 min bus ride. From Berchtesgaden there is a bus to Dokumentation Obersalzberg. The trip takes about 15 min. It is at Obersalzberg that you buy the ticket for the tour up to Kehlsteinhaus. This impressive building on top of the Kehlstein Mountain (1834 m) was built as a diplomatic house for Hitler. Hitler himself visited only a few times, and because of its location, the construction costs were staggering. Today it is a well-preserved historical landmark, a reminder of another time. The house contains the famous old fireplace, which appears in several pictures, and a few exhibits from the Nazi era. Otherwise it has been converted into a modern German cafeteria. The view is fantastic, and can especially be enjoyed outdoors. From Obersalzberg special Kehlsteinhaus buses takes you up the winding road to the buttom of the original old brass-lined mountain elevator.

We suggest that you book an extra night after your tour if you want to visit The Eagles Nest.
Dokumentation Obersalzberg is a museum about the Hitler era, so there's enough content for a nice day trip.
ATTENTION. In the summer of 2023, the museum is under renovation and therefore temporarily closed. Check the status yourself before heading there.
Buses from Schönau and Berchtesgaden to Dokumentation Obersalzberg can be found here.

On this journey there is a discount for children and people sharing a room with "two fully paying adults". The amount of discount depends on age; thus:

Children under 5.99 years: free
Children between 6 and 11.99 years: 50% discount
Children between 12 - 14.99 years: 25% discount
People from 15 years and up: 10% discount

Example 1
You are 2 adults and 1 child. Here it's very simple because you're staying in the same room. The child gets a discount compared to the prices above.

Example 2
You are 2 adults and 2 children (aged 5 and 13). Here you have two options. If you want to stay in two double rooms, it will be full price for all participants. If you want to stay in the same room (e.g. a family room), then both children will get a discount (free and 25% discount respectively).

Example 3
You are 2 adults and 3 children (age: 7, 13 and 15). In this case, you will probably need two double rooms where the youngest child sleeps with the parents. Therefore, there will only be a discount for the youngest child aged 7, who will receive a 50% discount.

Example 4
You are 3 adults who want to sleep in the same double room. The extra adult will receive a 10% discount.

Please note
It is important that you understand that it is your own responsibility when you choose to bring children on the tours. You should check the descriptions of the difficulty levels and decide whether the specific tour is suitable for your child.

We recommend taking out travel insurance that covers at least illness, accident, repatriation, lost holiday, luggage and liability. As a customer, you are responsible for taking out the necessary travel insurance to cover these costs.

Before taking out insurance, you should check whether you are already covered by travel or cancellation insurance through your home insurance company, credit card or similar - please note that there may be differences in insurance coverage.

After booking this trip, you get access to various discount schemes.
